Colorado is a big state...where are you going? What is the name of the city you will be spending most of your time in? If you know where you will be, Google the city/area and ask for weather/climate info for September! That should get you all the info you need! For instance, on Google; Denver, Colorado, average weather info for September!

I don't live there, but spent some time around Durango in September a few years back. You could wear shorts around town, but, up at the camp ground
you needed long johns.

It is hard to say. The weather in the Colorado mountains can change very quickly and the temperatures can go from pleasant to uncomfortable. I've been in shorts in the summer and having fun. Fifteen minutes later I was in a hail storm and freezing. It does have a lot to do with the area you plan on visiting.

If you are going to be in the mountains in September I suggest that you bring both summer and winter gear. In normal weather it can be dang right hot during the day but when the sun goes down you're going to be looking for a camp fire, and expect to wake in the morning to frost and near freezing temperatures!

I have vacationed in Colorado many times all in September. The weather has always been good . Mid seventies daytime ,50 and 60 at night unless high up in moutains. Bring shorts and light weight clothes for day and pants and warm shirt or sweats for evening and nights.

Weather in Colorado in September can range from the 90s to snow. I have seen snow in Denver during this month many times. The higher you go into the mountains will increase the probability of snow. However, September and October are my favorite months of the year for the weather is, generally speaking, pleasant. Warm days and cool nights. I assume you will be spending time in the mountains. In that case bring shorts and a warm jacket, and the clothing associated with those two items. The air is dry and the nights do not contain the warmth that builds up during the day.

It looks like most agree about the wild variations that are possible. Back in the 70's I lived in Colorado Springs for about 4 years which I totally enjoyed. I had a 1969 convertible Chevy impala then. On the Saturday before Mother's day we were riding through the mountains with the top down. It was a beautiful day. When we got home I parked the car in front of the house and left the top down. Those were vastly different days. In any case, the next morning I woke up to find 6 inches of beautiful white snow in the car. Needless to say that was a learning experience. I hadn't thought of that in years, but your question brought it back to mind. That of course was in May and not September. I don't know how many times I went to work or school with fresh snow on the ground, only to have it all gone when I returned home later that same day.

The replies here are accurate. Depends on where you go. Around Durango, which is in the southwest corner of the state, we are usually warm in the daytime-after the sun goes down it will cool off rapidly. The east slope (side) is usually warmer than the Southwest part of Colo. Anywhere you go in the state, if you go into the mountains it will usually cool down rapidly with elevation gain. Bring light clothes for the daytime, warm clothes for night. Hope you have a good trip.

I have lived in different parts of Colorado for over twenty years. September can be incredibly hot but also can bring on blizzards in the high country. If you are going to always be in cities you will be fine with a medium jacket and a sweater. If you are thinking of hiking some of the back country then I recommend a backpack with a heavier jacket. It seems every year people go hiking in the mountains wearing only shorts and a T shirt because the temperature is in the 80's to 90's. A couple of hours later a heavy snowstorm hits the mountains and they die. I am not trying to scare you but only to make you aware of what can and sometimes does happen. My place was at 7000 feet but have had 2 feet of snow in May. It was gone in a couple of days but I would not have liked to be out in the storm wearing only summer clothes.

Be prepared for sun as well regarding sun block.

Enjoy your holiday. Colorado is a beautiful state and you will love it.

Dennis

Weather in September as good as it gets. Leave your rain stuff home.

Temperatures depend on the elevation you are at. Relatively low (under 1500 meters) can be hot (100 deg F) in the day. Relatively high (> 2000 m) can dip to freezing at night.

The "front range" area of Denver and Colorado Springs will be pretty nice in September, but be prepared to layer - cool evenings and mornings are possible. If you will be going up into Rocky Mountain National Park or other high-country areas, be prepared for very cold weather - layer, layer, layer!

Lived in Denver for 15 years - layering is the best advice. Even if evening temps don't sound too bad, the contrast from a warm day will make it seem cooler. I did a summer astronomy class. Daytime temps were in the 90's, but at night when we were doing outdoor studies, we all were wearing winter coats; even though it was only in the mid-60's. Sept is great for Rocky Mountain National Park, aspen are turning, and elk are in the lower elevations, bugling like crazy. Mount Evans road should still be open as well, usually can see both sheep and goats along the road.
