I'm perplexed...
I got a software suite when I bought my D3400. Included are Corel Aftershot Pro 3 and Corel Paintshop Pro X9.
The RAW Nikon NEF files WILL NOT show in Aftershot. I don't even see the files in the Aftershot browser. But they will show up in Paintshop. I don't know why.
I also tried to open a NEF file with GIMP that I installed, and Gimp can't see them either.
My computer is very new and meets all the system requirements from the Corel website.
If I double click on the files in windows explorer no image comes up. I'm using Windows 10 with the latest updates.
Any ideas. I know someone here knows something I don't...lol.

Check to make sure that your After Shot Pro 3 is fully updated to allow support for your camera in raw format.
http://www.aftershotpro.com/en/support/updates/If Windows can't handle the raw format, make sure you have added the proper raws codecs - a raw file is NOT an image, it is data in a special format that must be converted into an image to display - without the proper codec your operating system knows not what to do with the data.

GIMP will not load RAW files. You must use a DNG converter.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Here is what I tried......downloaded and attempted to install the camera codex from Microsoft. It proved to be only for Windows 7 or Vista.
I did install the upgrade patch for Aftershot Pro 3. This still did not allow me to see the NEF files.
I installed the Codex from Nikon and this did allow me to see and use windows explorer to open the files which i could not before. Thanks Orange Krate.
None of the above helped solve my problem until I ran across a youtube video that said I needed to install my camera profile. Duhh....can't imagine why that would help....<g>
Installed the profile and all is good here in Virginia.
Thanks everyone for you input.

I just uninstalled GIMP. Thanks for saving me some time deciding i didn't need it.
Thanks. I did need this codec. It allowed windows to see the NEF files. But I still needed to install my camera profile. Now it works. :-)

Or find something like UFRAW, which is a very nice raw converter that can be used as a front end for GIMP. (I much prefer to use UFRAW as a standalone converter.)
Just put in the cd that came with the camera and install the Nikon software and you can see it.
You are trying to use too many programs and probably are not proficient with any of them.

And our resident curmudgeon weighs in.
He is only using two programs, that accomplish different tasks. His problem was in VIEWING the raw files not in using his two programs. Posting his question here, he received answers to solve his dilemma.
Your post here accomplished little, but at the least ... you did no harm.

Corel's programs are great and many people on the Hog use them. After 20+- years of Photoshop, I just couldn't conquer the learning curve. This year I discovered Affinity Photo. It builds on my Photoshop experience and then surpasses PS, being better and easier and less expensive and I get to own it. And, it is NOT an Adobe product from the Evil Empire.

Actually, you do not get to own it - you get a license to use it... pretty much like ALL software.
"Your Rights and Permitted Use
You are licensed to use the Serif Software as expressly set out in this License from your first use of the Serif Software until termination of this License.
No rights in the Serif Software are sold to you; your right is solely to use the Serif Software within the terms of this License. All rights not expressly granted to you are reserved to Serif."
And, when it requires an UPGRADE to continue working for you, you get to BUY it all over again ;)
No thank you, the Adobe subscription model works just fine for me, always the absolute latest, and never an increase in cost for years now.
