Hi folks,

My s/o and I are planning a trip to Acadia National Park this August. We know it's not the ideal time of year for birding but we must go when our jobs allow. We've immersed ourselves in a wonderful site, acadiamagic.com, which has been very helpful for landscape, sunrise-sunset, etc shots. We, however, are avid bird photographers and this site does not inform us at all about the best areas for birding.

Is anyone here from that area who could give us some tips for the best mid-August birding?

We'd also both LOVE to capture some Puffin shots but we also know that must be done via boat. Any suggestions would be most welcome there, too. We'll be staying in a motel (last room!) in Bar Harbor but may also camp for a few days elsewhere.

Any and all BIRDING suggestions would be most welcome. And yes, I have searched UHH for anything related to Acadia.

Thanks!!
Donna

My wife and I went last year. I found that the best place for birds is Sieur de Monts Nature Center, which is just south of Bar Harbor on Rt 3. I spent most of my early mornings and evenings there chasing Barred Owls and Pileated Woodpeckers along with so many others.
The loop around Eagle Lake is really nice too.
The views from Cadillac Mountain are long ranged when the fog is away. I got Towhees up there.

Wow, so many wonderfully helpful replies. I'm outta here to do a quickie preliminary female body builder shoot. There's another thread about that if you care. Then off to a family baby shower. I'll check back tonight and hopefully reply more fully. Thanks!!

Donna: We too are booked for Acadia NP, last week of August, and will be doing a photo trip with Acadia Images. Looking forward to it.

Wow, Gene. Just the info we were looking for. I'd read that NO TOURS went ashore to Seal Island. Apparently that was not true. That said, the trek across slippery rocks with camera equipment might be beyond our capabilities at this point so maybe it's best the tours are full. I did find two tours that do NOT go ashore that are not full yet so it's good that we both have Tamron 150-600 with cropped sensor cameras. I'd be very interested in your friend's recent experience when you find out. Thanks again for the links and the info. And yes, I'm most definitely looking forward to all the photographic opportunities - NOT just birding.

Sharron took these last week. She used BCC, and they went ashore. FYI, Her birding setup is a Canon 5D Mk III and a 400mm F5.6, no tripod and no stabilization.

She has more pictures that she will be posting in the near future.

Sailed out of Boothbay Harbor for the puffins, suggest you practice shooting flying footballs, while on a seesaw, they are small, they are fast, the boat rocks, and it is a large boat. fun trip, nothing usable at least for me, saw people with huge lenses, don't know how they framed anything, BTW the experts I spoke to said an adult puffin is about the size of a 1Qt milk carton, While in Bar Harbor, lift a pint for me at the Thirsty Whale, if you go down to Boothbay Harbor the restaurants across the footbridge have great lobster and other seafood, Bob.

The Stanwood Wildlife Bird Sanctuary is in Ellsworth, Me. You pass through Ellsworth to get to Acadia. The recommendation to check out Schoodic point is a good one. If you travel north on Rte 1, you will see signs for several state parks which will be worth your while. If adventurous , a trip to Baxter Park and Mt. Katahdin will be well worth the effort. Just call ahead to see when the gates open. By now, the camping sights will all be taken. I'm allergic to lobster so I can't help you there.

I got the opportunity to go out puffin shooting. The fog was not my friend the day I went out.
This is the best of my shots.

We shoot together a lot - I am always amazed at her sense of timing - having the camera at her nose and ready - she is close to perfect when it comes to anticipating the subject's next move. But you can get that from her pictures. She's been doing this for a while, and is quite the perfectionist when it comes to her work.
