"Gorgeous!"

Are you talking about the outfit or Suntouched?

I don't shoot a lot of birds so that outfit doesn't interest me much. My vote goes to Suntouched!! :-)

I shoot with a Canon 1Ds Mark lll. I have a Canon 300 L. I had a Canon 2x, I hated it. I have the 1.4 that I am not really wild about either. No matter what I did, I used a tripod, tried my wireless shutter release, I checked the charts and made sure the moon and stars lined up into a favorable conjunction, it did not matter.
The IQ was awful. I tried it on my 70-200 mm L, same results. I sold it. I will never, ever buy another one. If I need to be closer, I use my feet.
People here have posted some nice shots, but they haven't posted all the blurry ones that they got. I had more in the trash bin, than I saved. I would bet even money, that most of them do to.

LOL .....Mine needed a +12 correction MFA - once I did that, the images were superb. That lens with the 2X was better than ANY lens I have ever used !

You are correct, but that's normal. I just took 5000+ shots on a safari in Africa. Even without a TC I will have far more in the trash than I will save. Par for the course.

shot this with the original non-IS Canon 300mm with a 2x teleconverter attached, on a monopod. It was the first time I had used the 2x teleconverter with that lens

First, I would like to thank all who gave their opinions.
I probably should have noted that the 300 mm, f 2.8 in question is not the version 2 but it is the prior edition. It has IS which works very well.
It is true that it can be difficult to find the target bird and keep it in the frame. Lots of folks seem to be able to quiet well with this combo so I
was wondering what special skills they used to get their best shots.

I have read on some recent topics that good sharp images can be achieved with the 300mm, F2.8 and a 2X converter using proper settings.
Could anyone elaborate on the best settings to use when trying for Birds in Flight. I Know I need about 2000 th. of a second but what is the best F stop to use.
I just got a 5DM4 and want to see how well this combination will work out.
Thanks for looking.

Even though that lens is optimized for f/2.8, it is save to assume an aperture of f/8 to f/11 will work just fine, but you'll have to try what works best for you and what's best to your liking. Its an awesome lens, it's IQ will be slightly compromised, but it will still deliver!! Have a lot of fun with this combo. For BIF, handheld shooting is always the best way to go!!(and don't forget to turn IS to OFF)!

All my success with the 300 2.8's has been with facial stabilizers and a bodypod or monopod - which I do not consider "dumb luck" . The bodypod is the next best thing to hand holding. I cannot ever remember hand holding and getting a decent shot with the 300 2.8's - and rarely did I try.

Each to their own. I have the cheaper 5DIII with a 100-400 II and the 1.4 II and the quality is excellent even at the max 640MM where most lens tend to waiver. The only time I throw a shot away is when I'm shooting a moving bird with spot focus. Using a burst of 3-5 will get at least one "spot" on. Pun intended. if no movement each shot is clear even hand held.

I have a fellow photog friend that has the old 100-400 with 2x and it is excellent on his 5DIII and IV.

Something seems fishy with your setup.
