I am going to get a new printer, but it will not be just for photo printing. At the suggestion of another Hogger I researched this one. Seems good. But it also says it is just a photo printer. In my situation I will need a printer to do general type printing also? I don't do a bunch of general work but some now and again. Your thoughts. Thanks.
Best printer for the money hands down.

Even a very good inkjet like the Pro100 can't print black text as clean as a cheap laser printer.
I have not compared the Pro 100 text with either HP printer's text (inkjet or Laserjet). I will have to test this and let you know.
But if I were to have just one printer AND was not printing much text based stuff AND I wanted decent photo images I would not use a cheap all-in-one or a laserjet. The people who complain about ink costs for photo printers need to realize you are printing everywhere on the page rather than on 1/20 of the page as with text. See how many completely black pages you can print from your laserjet before it needs more toner and then see how the costs per page compare. You might be surprised how much you would spend to create white text on a black background on a cheap printer. {That is one experiment I will not be performing.}
I use the Pro 100 for Photo printing only and have an All-in-One for all my other printing/fax/copy needs
I have a Pro 100 and use it only for photos because ink is expensive. I use Epson EP 610 for general printing. The Canon Pixma Pro is a large, heavy, and slow printer, and does prints up to 13X19, quality is outstanding. The printer has 8 ink tanks, which I buy directly from Canon. I think I pay about $125 for a pack of 8 ink tanks. Usually Canon offers "free" gifts along with the ink purchase. Right now the "free" gifts are 2 boxes of matte photo paper 8.5x11, 50 sheets each. Also included is 2 packages of Pro Paper Sample Pack, 8.5x11. I have been buying this for several years, and over that time I have accumulated more photo paper than I will ever use. I realize that giving the paper away generates more ink sales, but this works for me.
I use the Pro 100 for my photo prints. It's excellent. As someone mentioned, it's quite large, and heavy. I use the Precision Ink refills as well, and it makes the printed quite cost effective vs sending out for printing. The Precision colors are flawless, and refilling is easy once you get he hang of it.
For document printing, I have a little cheap HP. 40$ or somesuch, I think.
What is the largest photo print you'd like??? Is an 'all-in-one' a need??
The advice you are getting is sound.
I was not prepared for the sheer mass of the Pro 100. It is really heavy, and its footprint is nearly four times that of my Brother all-in-one laser. Closed it is 27x15x8.5 inches (LxWxH). With the paper feed and output trays deployed, add 21" to the W dimension, and 6" to H (without paper). Does a great job with color print. If you will never want to print on anything larger than 8.5x11, there are other good options available.
It is not the most cost effective way to print photos (even large ones)--just like having a darkroom in your house wasn't the most cost effective way to make prints in the old days. For me, I like the idea of making the photo--start to finish. Even if it won't be as good as that from a professional lab. It's not a decision based on economics.
A decision that is based on economics: keep (or replace) your current printer for general printing. Cheapest general printing is going to be a B/W laser. Even though laser cartridges are more, your per-page cost is approximately 1/3 (or less) with a laser.
Use the rebate for the Pro 100 if possible.
I use a cheap Brother laser for most BW printing. It is fast, cheap and does duplex. If I need color I have other options.
Look at the Canon Pro-10 also. Photo printing only.

I bought this printer for $80 on Craigslist. It was new but the guy sold the ink out of it so it came with no ink. Yes, they got you when it comes to the ink. But I still bought it and then ordered this ink from eBay. I got it a few days later and I'm still using this same ink. Then I took advantage of an ink deal from Canon for $124.99 that came with $600 (yes $600) worth of free paper and free shipping. So go got that and then bought another set of ink from eBay.
Here's the eBay seller:

I tried printing documents on my Pro-100, beautiful and slooooooooooooooooooow, printed at the same speed it does 8 1/2 x 11 photos. I am using an old HP-940 for general printing.
Also the Pro-100 is large and heavy. An outstanding photo printer, but large, heavy and Canon ink is expensive. I refill with Precision Color. I also refill the 940.
==========
I have the Canon Pro-100 as well.... Text and other Document printing on an old HP 4000 Laser printer.
You mentioned "Precision Colors" and their re-inking "system"... YES! Really great product = especially for those who Print at least once a week (or more). There are some Great VID's on YouTube by "ToolMan" (Jose Rodriguez).....

I use the Canon Pixma Pro 100 and use it solely for photos. The cost of ink makes it prohibitive for daily printing. For daily use, printers are so inexpensive these days, you can get a quality item for daily use. I would price replacement ink for daily use printers to decide which printer I would purchase. I have an HP Envy 5660 for daily use, and subscribe to the monthly program they offer. It seems most cost efficient.
I have a pro 100 (3.5 years) YES!!!! Canon (often ) has sales on this printer. YES it is large-heavy-EXPENSIVE ink---(canon $ 108 on Amazon) It ALSO is a GREEEEAAAT photo printer..I use SOPHIA GLOBAL ink GOOD STUFF!!!! I use a Canon MG 5200 for every day printing..CANON does a good job on its printers....
