I remember not being able to go to the public pool in our town in the summer because polio was so prevalent. My cousin, who lived across the road from us, contracted it and was in the hospital for quite a long while. It was pretty scary stuff and the people today who do not want their children innoculated against polio are out of their cotton picking trees!

An interesting stat from a few years ago when I did some lectures on the polio trials is that there were about 350,000 children worldwide paralyzed with polio in 1988 when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was begun but only 1294 cases in 2010. The anti-vaxxers are just one of several groups of science-deniers who are now trying to run our country.

The Salk vaccine is now used in the US due to some risk from the Sabin live vaccine. In response to the thank God comment concerning the vaccines, you might want to thank medical researchers, not God.

Being a believer in the Almighty I feel he gave those researchers the knowledge and intelligence to find the answer to stopping a horrible disease. If you feel otherwise that is your choice. I will stick with mine.

Then, of course the Almighty gave all those children polio in the first place. Kind of a mean trick.

That is really great news John. Glad things worked out the way they did.

I have indelible childhood memories of people living in 'iron lung' machines in order to breathe. Jonas Saulk is truly a hero.

Like I said, your choice is yours, mine is mine. You aren't going to get me in a pissing match with you over theology. Only fools argue over politics and religion, because you can never win an argument concerning a persons beliefs.

Polio is one of those diseases that was a nightmare when it was around, but almost forgotten these days. I've seen it on TV, in both documentaries and in story lines, and it must have been terrifying living through those outbreaks.

My best friend is in the medical history file as the first person in the state of Illinois to be cured of polio. She became my friend when I sold her her first horse in 1975. We have ridden horses together, traded horses and our families went on vacation together every year for many years. Her body is twisted and severely crippled, but it never slowed her down. She's a strong lady, beautiful inside and out, and a precious soul. I am so thankful that she was cured. I remember taking the vaccine on a sugar cube.

If I remember correctly, Cutter Laboratories (the same Cutters that today makes insect repellent) was one of the companies that made polio vaccine. Due to testing mistakes, some of the vaccine they made contained polio that was not weakened or dead. I think around 600 children developed polio from the vaccine. The legal battles that followed had repercussions that are still with us today. Of course, society's parasites (lawyers) are always glad to jump on the contingency fee gravy train.

Q: How was copper wire invented?
A: Two lawyers fighting over a penny.

Did you hear they are considering using lawyers rather than animals for medical testing?
1. There are plenty of them
2. Nobody would miss them
3. There are certain things you can't get an animal to do

I do not remember taking the shots or sugar cubes, but I have a cousin who was born in '51 and he was probably 2 or 3 when he contracted Polio. I was about 15-16 but don't remember what was going on w/Ken, he was left w/an afflicted foot, does not slow him down much at all w/his duties as a Pediatrician.
BTW he was a Journalism major when he switched about Sophomore year, so he is very photo savey.

i had polio when I was 6, but was lucky. After nearly a year in bed, I made a very good recovery. 10 years later I joined the Marine Corps. I know just how luckey I was because a cousin of mine also had polio and spent the rest of his life on crutches and wheelchair. He had to wear braces on both legs in order to use crutches.
