And your opinion would be right regardless of the multitude of irrelevancies posted by many in this thread. People are just not able to answer directly. What a pity and disservice.

Your reply is most definitely one of those posts.

Why don't you try instead and help the OP? You claim to be a great photographer, why don't you post some examples, so the OP can learn from?

I don't think you went "wrong," but you might not be done working on the images.
Was the second shot yours, or after the IG filter was used?
I personally like the pose in the second shot more, because my eye is drawn to the same place as hers, the baby bump. She seems contemplative. In the smiling photo, her face is more the focus, and it is too dark (there are some remedies for this in post most likely). For future reference, one thing to experiment with is a reflector to put a bit more light on the front.
Try a different cropping --moving her a bit more to the right in the frame, and see if you like that. Or more importantly--if she likes it more.
Congratulations!

I was asked by my granddaughter to take some maternity photos of both her, and her family. First off, I am not a "people photographer", my area of comfort is landscape photography. That said, I agreed to do her maternity shoot, which she chose the time of day, golden hour, and location. She also sent me a link to several shots that she liked, which were all backlit with the sun. The day after our photo shoot, I started doing some editing, and I was very pleased with one particular photo, which I promptly sent to her. Here is where the "problem" arises, she doesn't want to hurt my feelings, but she doesn't like it. She feels it's too sharp, she wants a "softer" look. (Now you know why I won't do "people shots") So, we are meeting on Thursday to go through ALL 300 photos to see if I can use PP to make them more to her liking. She chose a very similar shot to mine, and did something with IG editor, and is happy with it. I'll post both shots, and perhaps someone can tell me where I went wrong.

I would prefer a "cleaner" setting - more emphasis on the person. That sun is just too much!

I remember going to a local presentation from a pro photog. He said, "I take two shots, one for me, and one for the client. And the client never likes what I like, but the client pays the bills."

The shot she likes is almost etherial. The one you like is more like a snap shot. I would suggest some cropping to create a more meaningful composition. If I may

I like the second photo, Lauren. Strong backlighting, as you have in these photos, is difficult to work with. You need to expose for her shadow side and try not to blow her highlights.

Seems to me that, in the second shot, she may be contemplating the future child that she is carrying. That alone makes it a better shot.

I certainly understand her preference...and agree. Did you try to crop closer so the ball of the sun in not in the shot, just the rays? I wanted to try it but PS won't open your jpg (may be a UHH problem.)

I like the second one but,
To me she blends in with the background, I would rather be able to see more of her.
So as for myself I would bring her in closer, fill the frame more with her rather than all the other stuff, after all the photo is about her....

Thank you, I'll try it.
