Did you try a search in the search box- You don't say what version of windows you are using. Of course you would need the name of at least one of the folders to try it! AND.. as mentioned- Don't you have a backup drive with all your photos? You can purchase a external drive for way under 100 bucks- Money well spent if your photos are important to you!!
That was my thought too. Search for a folder name. The OP may have inadvertently moved them to the hard drive.

No, that is not entirely true. Apple will attempt data recovery on systems that are 1. Still under one year warranty AND 2. Will not boot. Other than that you pay just like everywhere else.
He did mention it. He's a Mac dude.

You did not mention what operating system you are using. In Windows if you remember at least one file name of the files disappeared you can use Windows Explorer, and type that name in the search box at the upper right corner of the screen. If your file is found then the other files probably are there too. As Pilot64 mentioned you might have accidentally drag the top folder under some other folder, which happens very quickly if they are on the same drive.

He said it is a Mac and the photos are on an external hard drive. I don't think the Apple Store will fix his external drive. Just a guess since I don't have a Mac.
You say a back up drive? Do you have the backup program set to delete after some time? DO NOT SAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO THE DRIVE. The file is not deleted, only the info on where it is...Take it to your local expert to restore.......But make sure he/she copies whats left to another drive.......

When that happens to me it's usually that I inadvertently moved (bumbly fingers) the folder into another folder. I am using Win 10 so it's easy to click on the window icon and type any name (file or folder) and hit Enter. The Search function finds it if it's there and gives me the location.
I would definitely take it to an expert. They have their magical ways of making things you thought were gone forever, appear. That is as long as nothing was saved over it. I once had 2 years of family vacations on a memory card and I went to delete one photo and accidentally deleted them all. I put in a new card for the rest of the vacation. When I got back, I gave the old card to my nephew, who promptly restored all the photos with a program on his computer. He said if I had saved even one photo on the card after deleting them, I would have lost them all forever.
I guess the question is are the photos worth the expense?

Actually, you can't. You can't change it from a toy to a real computer.
I have NEVER paid at the Genius Bar.

I would search on line for a data recovery service and contact them to get your options. One example in Minneapolis is:
http://data-recoveryminneapolis.com/hard-drive-data-recovery.html.
I have no experience with them but their site offers a free phone consult.
It's a long shot but possibly the Apple Store might offer some recommendations with a bit of sweet talk and assuring them they are not going to be held responsible - might find a recovery tech doubling as an Apple Clerk!
If you have a local camera store, might see if they have a recommendation.
I would also disconnect the drive in question ASAP and if possible don't use your computer until you get an "OK".
Most recovery companies offer walk-in services, some will let you send the drive to them. Might think of backing up the drive with Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner before you do.
Good luck, Bill

I store all of my photos on a 3TB external hard drive. I just noticed today that at least three folders containing an estimated total of about 800 photos have disappeared. I don't know where they went, how to find them or how to get them back if I ever do. I can't write code, I know nothing about programing and I even have trouble with the utilities. Help please.
Is that your only copy? No backups? They are not on your computer's hard drive as well? The folders were likely inadvertently moved or deleted by you or someone else. Its also possible the drive has become corrupt which is why you should ALWAYS have backups. You can search your external drive for them but you'll need to understand how to perform such a search using your file manager. How did you put them on the external drive in the first place? What software did you use to do that?

Until you do, I wouldn't save anything else on that drive, it could over-write the deleted files.
Good point but easily forgotten. Tks for mentioning.
