I'm writing a series of articles for a national mag, they are 5000+ words and contain 10-12 photos each. I'm using my Nikon 7100 and iPhone to take most of the photos. They are jpeg 25 KB to 840 KB each in size. My editor says they need to be a minimum of 3 meg each. How do I retake the photo increasing the size to at least 3 meg for more DPI? The photos are of miniature buildings from 3" X 5" to as big as 6" X 12".

Thanks
Dave

Would that be 3 meg as in megabytes or megapixels. If it is as I suspect - 3 mp (megapixels), that would likely be 2048x1536 pixels, or larger. The iPhone is either 8 mp up to the 6 or 12 mp. your D7100 is 24 mp. DPI is an input number and has no bearing on output size, which needs to be at least 2048x1536 pixels. PPI, the actual meaningful number for printing purposes, is what the magazine should be giving you. They will likely be using a 150 lpi screen, in which case your image should be 300 ppi. So if you have an image that displays at 6"x12" - the worst case scenario - you will need an image that is 1800x3600 px, or 6.48 mp, which is more than the "3 megs" they are asking for.

It's best to speak with the person in charge, which in this case may be someone other than the editor you are speaking with, regarding the exact submission requirements. I doubt he/she is referring to file size.

You need to set your camera on finest JPG. That will give you enough megabytes. Examine your pics - you might find that you can also improve the shots - if you are able to re-shoot! If your wife is drastically cropping the pics that will reduce the megabytes, so fill the frame as best you can. Hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs, but although an amateur, I have done a similar job in the past. Mags like sharp and contrast - ask your ed. Good Luck.

We all type fast to get the message out. If I were writing for publication, I would edit carefully and not let mistakes get through. Sometimes I check my posts, and sometimes I don't.

If you're not interested in subscription service with Adobe for Photoshop and Lightroom, I'd suggest Affinity Photo. It's a powerful alternative to Photoshop and only costs $49.99.

Having tried to study a second language, I do understand the complexity of the English language in particular, but most languages have such difficulties to overcome. Still, with a wife who was a stickler about grammar, and a mother-in-law who taught languages, I have been sensitized to sloppy writing and improper usage. The country is clearly getting sloppier every day and I find that to be inexcusable in this modern age of 'information at your fingertips'. We should care more and we should make our kids aware more.

GIMP is free. But if you start enlarging the image very much, it will become pixelated.

My question is why the images are so tiny to start with. Is that how your camera takes them?

Rules of spelling and grammar that most of us learned by 4th grade. Sorry, but if one was born and raised in this country, there is no viable excuse.

How about: “would of” or “could of” instead of “would have” and “could have”?
