I have narrowed down my choice of lens to a canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 is usm ($395 used) or a canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DO is usm ($418 used). I am 70, need is, shoot mostly zoos and botanical gardens, and have a canon 60d camera. appreciate any opinions.

Edit: based on your response, ignore my earlier remarks (I have no first-hand knowledge with this lens), but you might find this review helpful: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-II-USM-Lens.aspx

I just looked at canon refurbished site- the non DO lens I am looking at are the 70-300 f/4-5.6 is usm and the 70-300 f/4-5.6 is ii usm. the 70-300l IS is considerably more expensive.

I hold TriX's opinions in very high regard for many reasons, but any 'L' lens is likely to be pricey. If those are beyond your range, then the ones you are suggesting can be good options. Avoid the EF 75-300 lenses, they are among the worst Canon ever made. I have the older EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 is usm lens, which is good for it's price and age. If you can afford the new (II) version I would go for that. It has been very well reviewed. The older DO lenses do have some flare issues under certain lighting conditions. Also look at KEH for used lenses.

Good luck.

Thanks Peter, I've edited/revised my earlier post - I misunderstood which 70-300 he was considering (I did think that was kind of cheap for the L version 🤦‍♀️)

I recently acquired the latest 70-300 IS II nano for $400 used on ebay. It is a good lens. The AF is amazing.

I also have the latest 55-250 STM $110 used off ebay - and I really think it is a better lens optically - just does not go to 300mm.

The older EF 100-300 L is a bit slow to focus but optically very GOOD - about $250 on ebay.

Photo Plus tested and rated the Tamron SP AF 70-300mm Di VC USD (full frame) ($450) as better than the two Canon lenses. You might want to consider that one too.
