I had to post this since its fate is unknown. This barn owl is just a day or two short of being able to fly, but was kicked out of the nest early. It appears to be missing a couple of talons on one foot. Nature often seems cruel, and since this bird may eventually starve if it has to hunt on its own, mama kicked it out. Of course several folks felt sorry for it (who could resist this face?) and rescued it. Here it is leaning up against the inside of a plastic bin, trying to both ignore me and get some sleep while it awaits a ride to a rescue/rehab place. Hopefully it will be allowed to live out its days well cared for, but sadly in captivity.

That's a beautiful owl. Hope it will be all right.
Absolutely beautifull picture. Nice work.
We might not like it, but Mother Nature has her reasons. Survival of the fittest can seem cruel. Preaching to the choir here.

I hope all works out well for the little guy.
Vicki, those wildlife rescue places are pretty good. We have on here that I don't hesitate to contact if there is a need.

I'm sure it will be fine. The rescue volunteers were coming later this morning to pick it up. I tend to rescue little creatures, but don't have time for this one since I'll be leaving on vacation later this week. They will probably do a better job with it than I could, and I probably would have ended up taking it to them in a few days anyway.

Sometimes, we seem to think we know best. Still, you hate to see the innocents suffer.

This is truly a barn owl, one of three babies living in the barn. It would be nice to hear how it does, but once the rescue places take over, you almost never hear what happens to the animal.

True. There seems to be one in each county, funded by donations and grants. It ultimately seems to be the best solution for this type of issue.
Sweet sad looking little baby! I wish him well!

Nice shot Vicki and a nice story even though a little sad.
On the bright side my 6 year old grand daughter (the delight of my life) calls these "Love heart Owls" because of the shape of the face.
What a precious little face but very sad story.... I hope he does well and lives a full life in an animal refuge center.
Vicki, thanks for sharing and hopefully you can keep us updated

It looks so sad. Pleased you managed to rescue him and it lives a long and happy life at the centre.
What a sweet face, Vicki! I'm so glad he was rescued and will have a good life.
