Indeed, by definition, all snapshots are photographs. But, how many of your "photographs" are popular enough that you have to sell to the public?

Do you not see a difference between any of your shots and any of those links I posted?

Also, no one said that you couldn't take a winner. But where is it?

Aaaah, there's the belittling I was talking about.

Yes, the photographs in your links are great. The hard work shows in the end result. I am not saying that me or any one else here is on that level. I fail to see your point or contribution to the OP other than "my pictures can beat up your pictures".

Oh, and I have no desire to sell any of my photographs, er, snapshots.

I would not use public opinion or sales as a guage as to good an image is.

That is because no one is asking you for one. If I could produce anything decent enough that people wanted a print of to put on their walls would be a good indicator that the picture is talking to people.

I would say that the distinction is up to the viewer. Snapshots being something that a picture has been taken of and a photograph presenting to their eye an indelible quality that makes it, for them, artful.

There is no belittling here. The op asked what we thought was the difference. In my case I posted 4 links. 3 links belong to talented artists. Then there is the link to Apaflo's.

The only other comment I have is about your last sentence. Are you saying that you would turn $$$ away if people wanted your photos? Really?

Absolutely. I don't take my little "snapshots" for anyone but my family and myself. 95% are candids of my daughter, family, and friends. The other 5% are of something of significance to either myself or them and can only be important to us. And I feel many of them are worthy of the term "photograph" since they evoke an emotion from me and the ones close to me through subject, event or both.

We are all capable of making an image that people would purchase to hang on their walls. Does that make it a great photo, or just a popular photo? Think of all the many bands or musicians out there. Some are very successfully commercially. Does that make them great musicians. All I am saying is that you cannot judge art on how popular or commercially successful it is.

Can a popular photo be not great?

PS: I really like your photos. Good stuff.

Did you bother to look at the other 3 links? What was your opinion of those?

I didn't--I was only interested in Apaflo's work, since the comment was directed at him.

And now I have--they are nice--I also consider them to be artsy-fartsy professional stuff, not what most of us do here.

I do not aspire to do such work, and I doubt that most others here do, either. We are mostly amateurs, doing what we do because we like it rather than trying to make a living at it. If that makes me a hack or some such, I happily accept the designation.

And, frankly, I don't give a damn about what snob photographers think of my --or most people's--work. I have entered competitions where my work was received well, and other shows of the same quality where those same photos weren't even hung, proving, to me, at least, that the eyeing and categorizing of a good or bad photo is entirely subjective. It is, as the old saying goes, entirely in the eye of the beholder. What you may like may be mundane to me, and vice-versa. And that's fine with me.

You could take a photo documenting the situation at Auschwitz after WWII and it might be a great Photograph. But I would doubt people are standing in line to get a 20x30 to hang in their home. So, I would say that sales are not necessarily the measure of a great photograph. Some photos are meant to inspire, some to entertain and most to document a moment in time.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Of course. Same with any art form. There are many popular paintings I personally don't like at all. There are LOTS of popular musicians that lack talent. And there are popular photographs that I don't care for. These are, of course, my opinions and apply to me only. That's the great thing about art in all it's forms, subjectivity.

If I shot to please tdekany... I would starve. Instead I am a over weight old fart.

Anyone wanting just a quick sample can go to this link:

http://apaflo.com/gallery4

There are 45 images, and I challenge any one who thinks even one is "just a snapshot" in any of these derogatory definitions.

Popular but not great in my mind would be the famous painting of a Campbell's Soup Can by Andy Warhol...
