I have a Canon Eos 7D mark II and was reading that there are updates for the firmware. I have 1.0.2. I wonder what the new firmware would do that I am unable to do now. Had the camera about two years and it works great as is and don't want to fix something that isn't broke. Some advice would be much appreciated.

Canon's web site will tell you exactly what firmware updates are available and what each one accomplishes. It will also help you download any update you want. You have a very good camera that may be better with updates. You might be missing some good stuff. It's free, so is the chance to read about it. Give it a look and see if it will be of help. Good luck.
The updates between what you have and the one released 6/1/17 were mostly about working with certain lenses and/or settings. This one corrects a problem with the last update (when installed on top of older firmware like your edition) that kept the camera from being wifi enabled with the $50 wifi adapter SD card.
You might as well put it in, it won't hurt and one day you may want/need it.

I keep both of my 7D2's updated because I firmly believe there are aspects to the firmware upgrade that may not get mentioned in the description. After doing the 1.0.5 upgrade, I swear my AF became more accurate-in both cameras. As stated, I believe these firmware upgrades sometimes address issues that the manufacturer doesn't admit to. You certainly don't lose anything by doing them, and they are very easy to do-with either the SD-card approach, or through the Canon EOS Utility software, which you should also keep updated.
I keep both of my Canons updated, one of which is a 7DII. It's quick and easy. While I haven't seen any downside to doing so, no noticeable improvements come to mind either. Just the same, I would rather keep them updated then not. It would be just my luck to send one to Canon for repair of a problem that was remedied by an update I didn't do.

If the camera is working fine and doing all you need it to do, it's certainly not mandatory to update the firmware. Other responses are correct, though... go to the support/download section of the Canon web page for the 7DII and you'll find details of what was "fixed" with the latest version of firmware. Often it's very minor stuff.
For the original 7D, Canon released a major firmware update after about 3 years of production. Rather than the minor incremental 1.0.1, 1.0.2 designation, the more major update was initially designated 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 (I forget). This was an important change... adding a lot of new functionality to the camera, including a substantial increase in buffering capabilities. But nothing anywhere near so dramatic has been done for the 7D Mark II or - for that matter - for most other Canon models during their lifetimes.
So, read the FAQ about the latest and greatest firmware and decide for yourself whether or not to do the update. Personally I no longer immediately install firmware updates when they are first released. I always wait at least a few weeks or a month or two, and let other people "beta test" the latest version. Over the years and with various models, several times updates have introduced a new problem that almost immediately required another update and fix! (Note: Canon always refers to it as a "phenomenon".... I guess they think that sounds better than "problem" or "glitch" or "issue"
)

From the Canon Website:
"Firmware Version 1.1.2 incorporates the following fix:
Corrects the phenomenon in which remote shooting with the Camera Connect App is not possible after connecting the EOS 7D Mark II to a smartphone via the Wi-Fi Adapter W-E1.
• This phenomenon only occurs when the firmware was updated from Version 1.0.5 or earlier to Version 1.1.1.
• There is no need to update the firmware if the firmware was updated from Version 1.1.0 to Version 1.1.1, or if the EOS 7D Mark II was equipped with Firmware Version 1.1.1 at the time of purchase.
When updating the firmware of the camera, please review the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware."
A big thank you to all who replied to my inquiry. I have read a lot online and decided that my camera is working just fine and am going to pass on the firmware update. bud

bud 77, please consider one aspect everyone seems to have overlooked, if you ever want to sell your camera on the open market it is going to be downgraded by prospective buyers for being out of date. Two items of major concern here on the Hog are clicks on the shutter and software updates. By your reasoning your camera will be less than desirable from a buyer's point of view. Canon thinks the firmware updates make cameras more attractive because it makes them more powerful. Canon's engineers put much time and effort into these updates. Serious student of photography tell Canon such updates are important to them.
