A couple of years ago I took a road trip to Maine. I was on the lookout for moose, but unfortunately, never did see any. I stayed in Greenville for a few nights and journeyed out from there. I remember heading northwest from my hotel in Greenville. Found lots of beautiful landscape opportunities. I want to try again this year (probably in late September), and am interested in hearing from anyone who might give me some ideas on where to stay. I will probably also try including a side trip to Acadia park too, so motel ideas near there would be helpful.

I really, really, really would love to see a moose in the wild, but I'm also interested in landscapes. Any ideas? I'll also do a search here and see if I can get some ideas from other posts.

Thanks in advance!

Good luck, but keep in mind that the moose is one of the most dangerous animals in the U.S. Keep your distance - a long lens is a good idea.

I was in Rangely in the fall and in all my Maine travels, both to Acadia and Greenville several times, it was the only place where I had moose sightings.

Whatever you do, if one is ever blocking the road, DON'T honk your horn!

I like the mid-coast area - Belfast, Camden, Rockford, Owl's Head, etc. I don't know about September, but Acadia is a zoo in the summer. We have friends who live across the bay in Blue Hill who met a moose the hard way and lost a Saab.

Since they started hunting moose in Maine (sort of like shooting a cow - the biggest challenge is getting the killed moose out of the swamp) the word has spread throughout the moose community to avoid humans. In years past you could go to Baxter State Park and see Moose almost around every turn in the road. Last time we went there - none to be seen. My youngest daughter, who spent 3 years living in Maine, thinks that Moose are like unicorns - mythical animals...

So - if you are mostly interested in scenery I would recommend staying along the mid-coast. The Camden area is very nice. Bar Harbor would not be too crowded after labor day and you are right at the front door of Acadia - endless photo-ops there, and then you can go either way along the coast to see tons of lighthouses.

Another option would be the Portland area. Portland is a neat city. You can take a day trip out to the islands in Casco Bay on the ferry. You can go up the coast to Boothbay Harbor and the Pemaquid Peninsula with the famous lighthouse there. You are one hour from the White Mountains of New Hampshire - lots of waterfalls, covered bridges, etc.

Consider using VRBO.com. If you are not familiar with it - Vacation Rentals by Owner. You can get a nice house or condo almost anywhere, usually at a decent price.

My wife and I stayed here early June (off-season). Less than a 10-minute walk to downtown Bar Harbor -- http://www.barharbormanor.com/

I second the VRBO idea. We have used them many times in Maine with great results. Unfortunately, they now charge a service fee since being purchased by Homeaway and then by Expedia.

Monhegan Island its off Port Clyde. A variety of topography in a very compact area. Think Wyeth country.

Use the internet for lodging. This is a very busy time of the year and if you rely on recommendations you will be chasing your tale. Better make your own reservations, and then ask for opinions from UUHers.

The Maine moose population has been hit hard the past few years by winter ticks. The population is down significantly from what it used to be. That said I have had luck seeing moose in the Rangley and Stratton areas. Route 201 between The Forks and Jackman is also an area I have had success.

I've spent two weeks in Sept in Maine for the last 13 years and have always looked for Moose. The only time I ever saw one was near Calais which is out on the east end of Maine and north of Eastport. And even then it was just standing in a field.
By the way, if you get near Acadia Natl park, I would also make sure to go to the Schoodic Peninsula which I think is just as pretty as Acadia and a lot less crowded. It's about 45 mins east of Bar Harbor on the coast.

But watch your footing on the rocks. They are treacherous even when they appear dry. You could end up with a large goose egg or worse on your noggin.

Steve suggested Boothbay Harbor. If you go there or find your self near there, be sure to look for Coastal Maine Botanical Garden (mainegardens.org) which is a few minutes away. Great photo ops.
