After adding a battery grip and a heavier lens, I had to abandon the neck strap.
Now I have the Fomito Quick Rapid Shoulder Sling Belt Neck Strap from Amazon - less than 15$.
Lightweight and allow you to draw up your SLR Camera quickly.
- Designed for Comfort and Durability.
- The length of the strap can be adjusted in front conveniently.
- Attaches to tripod 1/4" standard screw.
- Slides Up Strap for Split Second Fast Shooting.
And I agree that a neck strap is the tourist-look.
I second this vote. High quality and very versatile. I've tried many straps over the years and quit looking further after trying the Peak Design system.
I love the peak design strap. For the weight of your D800 I would choose the standard strap instead of the light model. It used an inovative quick dis-connect system that comes in handy for those times when you don't want to have a strap connected (on a tripod in the wind comes to mind). It is reasonably priced and very well made. I use nothing but their various straps anymore.
Like others that have posted ,I use a black Rapid sling strap, when I want to use a tripod I put on my Cotton Carrier photo vest, the camera hanges from a holster on your chest leaving your hands and legs free.

Blackrapid or any copycat, there's multiple variations of the best one, look at the sport version it stays better in place and there's also a two rigs model available
I love black rapid just follow their instructions. If you want a waiste belt look at spider.
I've tried several and always go back to the Cinch strap by Luma at
https://luma-labs.com/products/cinch-2. I'm 73 years old, travel internationally about 3 times a year and can carry my Nikon D810 with a Nikon 28-300 zoom lens attached ALL DAY without any neck pain, after dinner I switch to a Sony RX100 - all day is enough with the big camera.....😀 At dinner the Sony goes in my pocket as usually table space is for food not my big Nikon!
I have been generally pleased with my Black Rapid sling strap. It attaches to the Tripod mount and does swing. Being 73 I don't plan to much climbing so for me that is not an issue. The sling strap allows me to have my camera directly under my hand when walking and quickly available for shots. We live in Texas, so the thought of a vest or a chest mounted system is not appealing. I plan to upgrade to the Op-tech system as it connects to the camera strap lugs, making it ultra easy to connect or disconnect.

Presently I shot with a D800 which is a heavy camera. I am finding the regular neck strap to be quite tiring regardless of the lens attached. I am planning on a multi-hour hike to Gulf Hagas which is nearby and am seriously considering a sling-type strap that allows the camera to ride on my hip instead of on my chest. I know a lot of members like O-P. Any advice? How do these straps connect to the camera? Thanks.
Here's an idea I have, that just came to mind. Make one. I'm serious. You know what they say about necessity, right? There are plenty of durable materials out there that you can make a strap out of, and hooks to attach it to your camera with.
First, decide how long your strap would need to be, to raise the camera from chest height to your eye. Cut the material about four inches longer, so you can attach clips. Attach clips to the free end. Attach a couple of eyelets large enough for your clip to pass through, to each side of your (not so) favorite shirt, and you have a no neck wear strap. Have I done this? No, I just thought about it. You might want to reinforce the material on whatever sirt or vest you would wear, as that aouldn't last forever. It needs a little tweaking. :)
Check out Peak Design products. They occasionally offer deals on ebay as well.
I use a spiderpro holster with a spiderpro hand strap.
www.spiderpro.com. It leaves your hands free, your camera safe and easy to get at. I too have a heavy camera and lenses.... it works great. Peak design also has a capture clip which works in a similar way...
