I went to a bon fire party last night and took pictures using my 75-300 lens. I used f/4, 1/60 sec, ISO 800, using my Canon Rebel T3.
Can you tell me what happened with the girl on the right? What can I do to keep it from happening again? On a few other photo's the whole thing was like that.

Bon Fire Party

Wow...that's something nasty. The first thing that comes to mind for me is some sort of heat distortion arising from what appears to be flames in the lower right corner. Did this effect show up in any other shots, or in any other locations in the frame?

Yes, some of the shots had this throughout them. I deleted them because they were completely ruined. You couldn't even tell who the people were.

Looks like the smoke from the fire. You can see it as it rises just about her shoulder.

The woman was sitting in front of the flame and what you captured was the heat of the fire before her. Like a heat mirage in the desert. The camera sees thing that the human eye misses now you know your camera is the real deal.

I'm going to go with paranormal activity. If that isn't it, I'll go with the heat wave theory.

I am with the paranormal activity coming from the fire theory.
Stay away from bon-fires!
