Talk about a study in anatomy!
5D Mark IV with EF 100-100 L II + 1.4x TC at 504mm, but extreme crops from 30mp down to 1mp!
Check out the nictitating membrane over the eyes in a few of the shots.

Good grief! I've never seen anything like this before, and hope to never see it again. These shotsare absolutely amazing. How did you manage to get them?

That blue heron gargles with a vengeance. You may have invaded his privacy as he was about his ablutions. These are amazing captures, Fullframe, and gross or not - I liked them.
With an oral cavity such as that, it is designed to swallow whole. One at a time. Great shots. You may be the only photographer who captured such shots.

I was trying to get the whole bird, which is why I was not fully zoomed in at 560mm, but when I saw the mouth, I cropped away!
Thanks meister

I got them by taking at least 1800 shots in a three hour period. I followed this particular heron for a good hour or so. Just keep shooting, you never know what you're going to get!
Thanks for the comments Mike, glad you liked them.
Great shots......suddenly the Blue Heron does not appear so graceful and elegant.😀

Nice work! I thought I was crazy taking 1,000 shots in a week! Or 200 in an hour! The editing must be a marathon! When you live for it time passes quickly, and easily! Keep shooting!
Wonderful! As a physician I appreciate this unique view of the bird's pharynx! The Canon 100-?400 II (I presume 100-100 typo!) is a wonderful lens. A couple of questions:
1. Do you shoot manual or auto focus?
2. Single shot or multiple frames?
3. Hand held or supported?
Thanks for sharing!

Yes it was a typo. 100-400 II.
1. I mainly shoot sports action wildlife so i never manual focus. I always autofocus or I'd miss the shot.
2. High speed continuous shooting.
3. Handheld, except when I'm shooting at 1200mm with the 600 prime with 2x tele converter. Only then do i use a tripod or monopod.

Great shots. I wonder if something was stuck in the gullet and it was trying to force it down. Either way, tremendous shots. Gary
