All the posts about Ricoh Pentax going under has caused all my cameras, K1000, Pentax ME, ECT ECT all the way to my new K1 to refuse to take any photos.

Can't believe everything you hear, especially on the Internet. According to rumors I've heard, every single camera manufacturer, except the iPhone, will be closing up shop very soon. Call me crazy, but I continue to invest. Best of luck.

The humor in this statement exposes the underlying discussion. Of course cameras will continue to work even if the manufacturer goes away, just as an automobile can long outlast its manufacturer {as was demonstrated down the street from me when the Studebaker club came to town for their annual event}. The question is what kind of risk is someone taking by "investing" in a brand with an uncertain future. A new purchaser goes in to a brand expecting to be able to purchase lenses, then additional bodies, for some years to come, or for the equipment to have some retail value if s/he decides to unload it so s/he can go elsewhere, (*) so the danger from people who spread "news" {or sometimes just Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt} is that their words will cause some potential new owners to go to a seeingly more stable brand instead.

(*) except for me. I kept my Pentax equipment for the twenty years I was a Canon owner, so that stuff provided a start when I went back to Pentax.

Ricoh Statement Regarding the Future of its Camera Business
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Caldwell, NJ, April 14, 2017—Ricoh Imaging today issued a statement to clarify misinformation shared in an article posted by a business media outlet earlier this week. The article claimed that Ricoh was considering shrinking its camera business and withdrawing from consumer products.

This article was not based on an official Ricoh announcement.

The official Ricoh statement on the future of its camera business is that the company is focusing its resources on products that are unique and bring high value-add to its customers, such as PENTAX and GR cameras, which are appreciated by professional photographers and photo hobbyists. Ricoh is also investing in and will continue to expand its business in input devices for virtual reality and augmented reality—where the company sees rapid growth—with its industry-leading Ricoh Theta line of 360-degree cameras.

In addition, Ricoh will develop and expand its solutions-based businesses in imaging, pursuing opportunities in vertical markets using Ricoh camera technology.

Pentax just had 4 cameras listed in the top 11 aps c cameras for 2017. Ricoh does not seem to be able to capitalize on this through their advertising method.

During the past few years, I've seen reports about DSLR camera brands projected for extinction: Olympus, Fugi, and now Ricoh. On the contrary, these brands are providing excellent products; their DSLR models are better then ever, as good as Canon's or Nikon's mass-market monthly new model releases, or better. Also, which brands are developing the newest technology (such as mirrorless)? Olympus, Fugi, Sony, Pentax, but not Canon or Nikon.

Did you have a talk with them? You need to talk to your cameras often they don't like to be neglected.

If I was starting from scratch with lenses, flash and other gear I would avoid Pentax. Now that I have a good selection as soon as I confirm Pentax is going away the fist thing I will do is buy a new body while I can.

There are good lenses out there for Pentax. I've no problem with finding what I need for my style. I think the most neglected area for Pentax is sports photos.

Perhaps what your cameras need is a good laxative.

Whisper to them that it is a hoax and the company is fine and those cameras will spring back to life for you.
