Am I being watched?

I own and indoor Nest Cam which I use the watch over my dogs and overall security when I leave the house. Several times, specially during the night I have noticed that the camera becomes active (green light on) without my command. Supposedly this camera and connection to my WiFi is secure but I am growing very concern about someone else watching what goes on in my house. Has anyone experience this? Any ideas?

When you get home in the evening just put a piece of electrical tape over the camera or throw a hat over it to block it. If it is being hacked they will give up if all they can see is your dogs during the day. I have a Logitech camera that you can purchase a cover for the camera separately. A little over priced but well worth it.

I am doing better now...I simply disconnect the camera from the power supply. Thanks.

That's one way to nip it in the bud.

Gee, spending time in General Chit-Chat may not help.

I have noticed when on line, every so often, what looked to be a black thin line frame flash on the screen. I taped over the camera lens on my laptop and it has not happened since. (New Dell with Windows 10).

That's the first thing I do with a new laptop (block the camera). Unless you really need it, that can prevent some unwelcome surprises (especially in a business setting). It's the potential video equivalent of having an unintended open mic on a conference call 🤦‍♀️.

I do the same with my laptop but I find it very disturbing that the "super secure" Nest Cam is being hacked. I have also considered that perhaps a power line glitch may be responsible. Again, I just unplug it while I am at home.

We have so many devices networked now that security should be a big concern. Even children's toys are networked. I bought a wireless engine computer monitor for the car - very cheap from China - but as I fired it up and gave it access to my network I started thinking - is this programmed to expose my network to others? Recently hackers invaded the network of electronic records of the National Health System in the UK. The news had stories of ERs shutting down because they could not access any records. I think that from individuals to power plants to hospitals we all need to assume that we are being hacked and at some point we may need to be able to operate without our networks... And all of us should start segregating even at the personal level our "network stuff" from any important computer work - a separate computer for our photography and finances, for example - one that is not connected to a network and upon which no internet work is done.
