I'm sorry if I'm high jacking this thread! But one quick question my 55-250 says just that on my lens but after photo in playback it says stm not sure what to make of it

The definition for that abbreviation is on the CanonUSA website - look up Lenses and look for the abbreviation. Or check the box the lens came in. Or just Google the abbreviation. It's okay, it's not a bad thing.

Incredibly, according to Canon's MTF charts, the 55-250 STM is SHARPER in the central 1/3 of the crop frame than ALL other Canon tele-zoom lenses at maximum extension and wide open - except not sure about the 200-400 TC. ! That includes both 100-400's and especially, the 28-300 L ! - just sayin'.......

Eye don't go by charts and statistics, eye go by what eye see with my eyes. All the Canon lenses I use on a regular basis have that iconic crimson band. The one exception is the 55-250 STM, which I use primarily for video. My photos are plenty sharp for me and my videos look pretty good also. One would have to believe a $2000 lens will outperform a $450 lens. If this is not the case then Canon would not sell many $2000 lenses. For the cost, the 55-250 STM is an excellent lens.

I use it with Canon EOS 750D body (Rebel t6i). Awesome combination, I must say! Very good AF speeds allow me to do bird-in-flight shots. Excellent BG compression and blur when doing portraits @ 250mm.

I am into insect macro-graphy, and had bought this lens specifically to shoot butterflies. When this lens is mounted, I keep a Raynox DCR-150 handy which gives me a max mag ratio of 1.2:1 from a working distance of 16cm.

A great lens for EOS 70D upwards and EOS 700D (Rebel t5i) upwards... but unfortunately is slightly (12.5%) less sharper with EOS 7D Mk2 according to DXOmark sharpness test.

Image stabilization is good... I am able to do 250mm portraits @ 1/40s.
But I turn IS off at shutter speeds exceeding 1/500 (Bird-in-flight shots) as it seemingly affects the autofocus.

A friend of mine is looking for feedback regarding this image stabilized "STM" version of this lens. I understand this this STM lens is Canon's third iteration of this design. Since cost is a major consideration for my friend, he is looking at buying one in used condition at <$150 via Amazon. Most likely use for this lens would be landscapes, events and other general photography using a 7DMkII camera. /Ralph

UPDATE ON RESULTS -- Thanks to everyone who responded to my buddy's request for feedback concerning this lens.
He purchased a used copy of the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM via Amazon. After receiving the lens, he was pleased with the design, build quality and how well it balanced on his Canon 7DMkII. Attached is one of his initial 'test' shots made at a focal length of 200mm with the lens set at 1/320 second at f/5.6, ISO 200. The shot was handheld and IS was on. The flowers from his backyard were a bit windblown and frazzled after a storm, but IMO the sharpness and color rendition of the lens is acceptable, esp. given the lens cost him less than $140.
