You know how to think. It is not that I need a new piece of equipment that I think will give me better pictures, it is being able to show off and brag. Looky what I got. Don't know how to use it, but it will give me better pictures.

Why would someone pay you for that?
Now that I'm retired I have more time to dream and covet new gear for my hobbies but to keep from going broke fast 1) we use the "we're on a fixed income" chant 2) we do days to weeks worth of research on the item we want 3) we read all the reviews of the seller and their return policies 4) we have money saved for the purchase even if we use a credit card "a GAS can fund" 5) we fully functionally learn and test whatever we purchase and finally 6)if it's for a new or rediscovered hobby like photography or music, we sign up for lessons. In summary, GAS becomes exhausting so we can keep it in check.

I'm with you. Life is short and money is just a number in a ledger anyway.

Instead of whipping out a credit card every time you get a gas attack wait until you have accumulated the cash. Get some sort of container - your GAS CAN - and dump the coins from your trouser pocket into it every night. Add any 'found' money, expenses reimbursement, rebate checks, lottery winnings, repaid loans etc. Every time you withdraw $100 from the ATM, put $20 in to the gas can. By the time you have accumulated the cash for that next 'must have' the gas attack will have passed and you will probably have survived a couple of other attacks in the meantime. Before you know it, you will have enough cash for a really worthwhile upgrade and you can splurge guilt free with money you never even missed.
I started doing this a couple of months ago. Initially I was saving to step up from the A6000 to the A6300. When the A6500 was announced I decided to hold out for that. By the time I had enough for the A6500 there was another Sony announcement imminent so I waited. It turned out to be the A9. I decided the A9 was not for me, but by then I had enough for the camera of my dreams - the A7Rii so I emptied the gas tank and went for it. Now I'm starting again for for the 25mm Zeiss Batis. By the time I get there, maybe there will be some other 'must have' I'll decide to wait for.
OK - so maybe its not a cure, more of a remission.

GAS stuck and I just had to have that 150/600, so I got a great deal using Greentow, the credit card company gave me2% cash back, the company the lens came from gave me a $17.00 credit for future purchases. when the bill came in,I just bit the bullet and paid it. That was bought 6 to 8 months ago.
I would still be saving for that lens and would have missed out on all the enjoyment I got from it. Being old and retired I have to make every day count .
If I keep waiting for what I want, I'll be too old to enjoy it.
Same goes for my D810, I said gee maybe the new model will be out soon.Should I wait????? Naaa I sprung for it. There are people here on UHH that have been waiting for a year for the new model. I say if u can, just go for it.....

Good idea, just don't let the wife see the GAS can. There might be a new outfit and matching shoes show up and your GAS can is dry.

Done that for many, many years! But I don't call this a cure, more a suppressant, because the GAS keeps coming back!

I have everything I will everything I will ever need. I never want for anything, except to sell this bridge in..........
A more depressing cure for GAS is to ask myself (for all my hobbies) "where will I keep or store this new camera, lens, tripod, backpack, printer, handgun, rifle, scope, bike, etc." and "what will I get in trade for my old XXX". There's just so much room in the gun safe, closet, garage, attic, for all our stuff and finding out how little my old prized possession is worth in trade is eye-opening.

That is exactly what I do.
My cure for G.A.S. is to shoot a film camera. Mine is 43 years old and getting a newer one won't change anything. It has a shutter button and a focus ring...that's it. Add to that that there's nothing to upgrade TO....and you have automatic G.A.S. remedy.

I have another cure for GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). It is poverty, before the purchase or after.
I can identify. My own cure is called "regret."
Made enough mistakes buying expensive gear to be much slower with the plastic.
I also rent things I'm curious about, quick relief from GAS.
All this GAS on here is enough to drive one crazy. Get out the depends because sooner or later one of these gassers is going to blow!
I may use plastic for the purchase, but our "gas can" backs it up at the end of the month to avoid payments and interest on same.
