Photoshop CS5 Question

I have a picture of a very dear friend who is wearing a white T Shirt. I would like to change the shirt to red or blue. The color replacement tool doesn't work since with white there is no color to replace. Is there a way to do this, maybe with layers?

OK Give me a clue, where do I find "Select,darken,recolor" I am using CS 5 and can't seem to find them. I've looked under "Image-adjustments,etc, but either miss it or cant find it.Would appreciate help. Thanks,

Not trying to be smart, but perhaps your problem is not considering white to be a color. Philosophy aside, any post processing program will work with white just like any other color. If you can change it from green to red, then white to red would be done identically.

If I'm correct, I think what Oleg is trying to say is that you need to use one of the selection tools and select your subjects shirt (You need to do this on a separate layer, do this by hitting Ctrl + J) then change that layers blending mode to Darken from the drop down box, then use the color picker and click on your foreground color and change that to the color of your choice, then use an appropriate size brush and paint in that color on your subjects shirt. Hope this helps. If your not familiar with layer blending modes, I suggest you google it and read up on it. It's amazing what you can do with blending modes. Good Luck.

I somehow remember from my ancient past the statement that white is the lack of color and black is the combination of all colors. That was the basis for my previous statement.
When I try to color the white tee shirt using the color replacement tool, I can't make it take color. Maybe I'm not doing it right? Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

You first make a selection of the area you want to color on a new layer. Using the color picker, click on your foreground color, choose the color you want, pick out a soft brush and color in your selection with the color you chose before using the brush.

And yes, The color replace tool doesn't work well with white or very light colors. I just tried it.

If you get all this figured out, then before you paint over the shirt, you can try to select blending mode "color" then paint the shirt and the colors will be translucent. This may be an effect you like - or not.

Sorry photojoe but I thing it's a wrong approach. In my experience when I BRUSH a color onto a patch in a diff. layer I get a bleed. That's why I didn't suggest it. Selection keeps the brush effect within borders.
