Took this 50' from nest on HX100V Sony set on automatic scene. Lighten Papa on iPhoto because he was shadowed and this made chicks a little too bright but guess it couldn't be helped. All four chicks flew away two days after this photo but one who was in danger of getting on road; so, daughter offered her finger and he hopped on for her to take him back to his tree where he got reoriented and flew safely away.

Your work in PP on this shot need not sacrifice the depth of color and tone on the rest of the picture for the sake of digging out Papa from the shadows. Does your software have selection capability, where you can isolate him for PP and leave the rest alone?
Haven't found a way of lightening just one area of a photo on iPhoto. I'll keep looking.
