After 30 years, always over-deliver and under promise and they will always call you back.

It is interesting that in the field of Astronomy, armatures have discovered way more comets, asteroids, and exo-planets than the professional astronomers. I think we could say the same thing about who takes the majority of the really great photos.

If s/he can write the gear off on their taxes. Legitimately.

I once knew a "professional photographer" who made a very nice living taking aerial photographs of people's farms. The Hasselblad was always focused at infinity so all he had to do was adjust the aperture and shutter speed - and keep the shadow of the plane out of the picture! He knew diddly about what I wanted him to tell me about photography. I'm not impressed by the title "Professional Photographer". Someone once asked me if I wanted to be a professional. My response was "I enjoy photography too much to turn it into a job". Give me a skilled hobbyist any day. Now "Professional Wildlife Photographer" does get my attention.

My attempt at slang for referencing efficient, artistic and high quality post processing. I know I will trigger another round of debate if I mention SOOC vs PP .... (SOOC = Straight outta the camera, PP = post processing)...lets let the sleeping dog lie...

Thanks Don. I'm going to remember your line.
"I enjoy photography too much to turn it into a job".

I made that decision when I was young! I decided to photography as a creative passion for myself, and not to contaminate that passion with schedules and budgets and the pressures of professional life.

In the world of harsh reality, any one who calls themselves a professional photographer is one. Deal with it. >Alan

Hmph. Not exactly in line with the other 8 pages of replies, but if that's what you choose to believe then who am I to argue?

I don't believe that he is wrong. Have you ever met anyone who called themselves pro photographers who weren't?

There is an old parable that goes something like this:

A turkey in a farmyard saw some of the other birds high up in a tree. He tried to fly up into that tree, but he didn't have enough strength. The barnyard bull saw him and told him, eat some of my droppings that will make you stronger. So the turkey did that. And after a period of time he gained strength and was able to fly and perch high up in the tree. The farmer saw him in the tree and shot him, for dinner.

The moral of the story is, bullshit can get you to high places, but it won't keep you there.

The question may be relevant to this group, but it has been beaten TO DEATH.
A better question might have been "How can I increase the likelihood my work will be perceived as truly Professional?"

Yes, yes!

I'm not sure what your post has to do with that, but what ever. If you go out in to the world to record life with a camera and you get $$$ for it, that makes you a pro photographer. Why some of you have an issue with that is beyond me.

I frequent a few photo forums, but the amount hacks that post on this site is unmatched. And many of them are making a living at it. No matter what I or anyone else may think of their work, they are still professional photographers.

What I find really interesting is that many who feel the same way as you do, also couldn't take a good picture if their life depended on it.

Snapshot shooters badmouthing snapshot shooters. Only on UHH! Lol.....

And now you claim to know how I feel! Prey tell please enlighten the rest of the readers. ;)

Back to the topic, your words 'I don't believe he is wrong' were in response to the claim "anybody who calls himself a pro is one". Which says nothing about actually making a living at it.

But if you are now saying a pro is defined by someone making a living with her camera, then I agree.
