Looking to Improve

My wife told me I needed a new hobby before I could retire. I have always loved photography and was amazed at the beauty that can be seen through another's eye. I would appreciate any criticism and advice on improving. Thanks ahead of time.

Is that your wife in the last picture? It's hard to tell with the sunglasses but she looks a lot like someone I went to college with.

Your photos are quite good. I only have a problem with the fourth one because I can't find the subject. The flowers (roses? ) with the foreground bokeh is one of my favorite techniques. I'm sure some will say that the skyline photo (is that Rochester, NY?) Is overprocessed, but I think it works.

If you want to improve, you could always take a course from a local community college, or find a photo club in your area (try Craigslist or Meetup). Of course this board has challenges that you could try.

We are in Cincinnati (that's the skyline), my wife went to the University of Cincinnati. The rose is the subject in #4, ironically, it is from the only photography class I have taken!! I have "Less procesed" views of the skyline. I'll post them below. Thank you for the input!

I think the sky in #2 is over-processed. The second batch of skylines are better. I like the 's' curve in #3 but again the sky looks funky. There is no rose in #4 and I don't get what we are supposed to be looking at. The picture of the lady is very nice. #1 and #5 look the same.

A couple of simple questions to ask yourself are:
What do I like about this shot?
What can I leave out?
What do I want the viewer to look at ?
How do I guide the eye to what I want them to see and to linger there?

A tip that has worked for me - commit yourself to posting pictures here on a regular basis. That will get you out shooting with a purpose and you will strive to get better, plus honest feedback is extremely valuable.

not bad but there are a few things to consider.
1. the picture with the red flowers: When taking a shot like that make sure your subject is not blocked out by the foreground. the flower is the subject here
2. the skyline: the buildings need a perspective correction they are all leaning in different directions instead of standing straight. I don't know what is going on with the sky but that big black spot next to the clouds is distracting and brings your eye there.
3. The tree: Get the whole tree in the picture you cut it off on the left.
4. The S fencing is very nice, it has a leading line can be sharper.
All and all they are very nice and shows you have a good eye for subjects

Thanks for the reply. The crazy skyline one is simply an HDR filter that I played with. I also noticed the building issue, I'll play with that a little and see what I can do. The rose picture was actually an assignment to place something in the foreground, it is a little distracting, but I kind of like it. As far as the tree, I was trying to get all the different colors in rather than the tree, good lesson to look at the composition before shooting.
