Heck Yes.. I am still using a legitimate version of Office 2003 on my Windows 10. In fact, as a computer consultant last 25 years, I have not found any consumer or professional software that did not run on various deployments of Windows 10, including the early adopters and current version. Best version of Windows EVER!!! I've probably converted or upgraded 25 to 30 client computers from earlier versions of Windows (inc Windows 7 all variants). And that's not to mention a number of my own, and computers for resale.

Windows 10 was stable when it came out, and even more stable in development. Occasional computer "brain farts", yes. Mostly due to user glitches.

I taught Windows OS for years at community college level, including classes in Windows 10. 22 years instructing at Central Oregon Community College and more running my own consultancy on small networks and hardware builds.

NOW KEEP in mind.... Microsoft wants you to move to Office 365, which is a monthly subscription similar to Adobe CC. That's where the pressure will come from.

Anything special I need to know about using older software with Win 10? tips and tricks appreciated
I have a lot of software for Win 95, 98 etc. I will have to see if Win 10 can install and run some of them. Flight simulator games like Wings Over... and Starwars plus a couple of indexed religious book collections, etc.

My last PC came with Office 2007 already loaded, so I never had the discs. I just bought a new PC and it only has a "trial" version of Office 365. Is it possible that Microsoft would download Office 2007 to my new PC or provide the discs, since I already paid for it a few years ago?

I have 4 computers with windows 10 I have installed my Microsoft office 2007 professional in all of them and it works fine. Not sure about the home version but it still should work. Doesn't have all of the new stuff but it is what you are accustomed to...

You may be able to go to the downloads folder (older PC), find the Office Setup Icon, copy it to a flash drive and try installing it on the new PC. A bit "iffy", but may be worth a try. I did that for a few programs loaded on my PC and installed them on my laptop from a flash drive(both Win 10). I do not think Microsoft will send you disks. Did you purchase Office on the older PC or was that part of the purchased manufacturer's configuration? Realistically, you have gotten reasonable use of the Office program (2007 - 2017).

I agree with the other posters who say that there are plenty of free or cheap Office alternatives. Most recently, I have been using WPS (I think it was previously Kingston) which still works fine, but recently the free version has gotten aggressive with Ads and upsell (so l will be checking out the others mentioned here).

They read, write and share the Non-Password protected files with no problems. However, AFAIK, only Microsoft Office will open a password protected doc or worksheet. So, if you have a business (or personal) need to open and share password protected Office files, you will need to spring for the Microsoft version.

While I'm on the topic, the web has plenty of password crackers for MS Office, Zip, PDF... all the common formats. So don't bother with a password protected file unless the password is long and strong.

I have gotten good use out of Office 2007. It did come already installed on my older PC. The store where I bought my new PC did not tell me that the Office software installed on it was only a "trial" version. Didn't find that out until a few days later after I had paid to have all of my data transferred over and done some further configuration. I challenged the store about the misrepresentation and the manager said that the salesman wasn't there, but he knew that he was aware that the Office 365 loaded on the machine was a trial. I explained that I had asked twice if the PC had Office installed and was told yes both times. The manager said he would give me a discount of $20, bringing it down to $130. I told him that wasn't enough to make up for the blatant misrepresentation. Someone standing nearby asked of I had heard of the free Open Office software and explained that it had pretty much all of the capability that I was looking for. I checked it out and it appears to be very capable. So, one computer store definitely lost a customer. A shame. I have purchased a lot from them over the years. Never again. What ever happened to customer service?

I stand corrected (by myself ). I just looked at the Ashampoo website, and they say that they can "Open and save DOC and DOCX files from Microsoft Word 6.0 to 2013 faithfully to the original, *including* password-protected files".

So, I will definitely be checking that out.

I'm sure you will find Open Office satisfactory. Sorry about the issue with the "store". Did you inquire about Office prior to purchasing? That is a general practice of PC manufacturers. Installing trial programs. Good luck with the new PC & Open Office.

Commercial software is rarely free when you buy a new computer. The free stuff some computers have pre installed is usually older or lite versions of software. In the last thirty-five years I've never seen office included as "free" software. If it was loaded on your earlier PC, then you paid for it. Whether you realize it or not, it was built into the price.
