I am about to buy a new laptop with Windows 10. Does anybody know if my 2007 home version of Microsoft Office will work with it or whether I need new software as well?

It will work just fine. However, if you'll only have a single license for Microsoft Office 2007 you may not be able to reinstall it on your new machine.

I use Office 2007 Professional on three machines running Windows 10. I think 3 machines is the limit. But you used to be able to contact Microsoft and tell them you were deactivating it on one machine and putting it on another.
However Office 2007 reaches its end of life Oct 10 2017 (no more support or updates etc. So I am thinking about some kind of replacement. Hopefully a cheap replacement since am retired and can't write it off anymore.

Just curious....
Have you sent the files you saved in ashampoo to anyone and they were able to open and edit the files in Office and then return to you for further edit or publication? Wordprocessing files, Excel files and Powerpoint?
That's a good purchase IF it will do as it advertises?

Actually, and I think unfairly, per the Microsoft Store in my local mall, Microsoft doesn't support deactivating on one machine and reactivating on another anymore. Unless you buy multi license software you have one install with the more recent versions of Office, and if you get a new computer you can't transfer the copy from one machine to another. One license per one SPECIFIC machine. However, I'm pretty confident he'll be able to reinstall Microsoft Office 2007 on another machine without deactivating first. I don't think Microsoft tracks prior usage of that version any more.

I was faced with the same dilemma until someone told me about "Open Office". It is free software that offers all of the basics of Excel and Word without the "whistles and bells". If you are just doing spreadsheet stuff and word processing, it might be worth a try.

I would look at LibreOffice. I use it for everything. It is compatible with Microsoft Office and will read and write using all the Microsoft formats. It is also free. I have found a few quirks but nothing that makes a big difference. It works on Microsoft and Linux operating systems.

I have a neighbor running Office 2007 on a Windows 10 machine and it runs perfectly. He also has it installed on his old Vista system and his Windows 7 laptop. No problems.

I have Open Office as a substitute utility on my Win10 laptop and still use Word & Excel "Starter" (free, but no longer available) on my Win 10 desktop - since 2011. I'd look at either OpenOffice or Libre Office. Libre Office was spun off of OpenOffice. They will read and right a multitude of file formats.

Heck Yes.. I am still using a legitimate version of Office 2003 on my Windows 10. In fact, as a computer consultant last 25 years, I have not found any consumer or professional software that did not run on various deployments of Windows 10, including the early adopters and current version. Best version of Windows EVER!!! I've probably converted or upgraded 25 to 30 client computers from earlier versions of Windows (inc Windows 7 all variants). And that's not to mention a number of my own, and computers for resale.

Windows 10 was stable when it came out, and even more stable in development. Occasional computer "brain farts", yes. Mostly due to user glitches.

I taught Windows OS for years at community college level, including classes in Windows 10. 22 years instructing at Central Oregon Community College and more running my own consultancy on small networks and hardware builds.

NOW KEEP in mind.... Microsoft wants you to move to Office 365, which is a monthly subscription similar to Adobe CC. That's where the pressure will come from.

Open Office and Libre 5 are both viable substitutes for Microsoft Office (all versions) and read/convert files/write files with no trouble. They are both in the Open Source market and are free to download, install and use as needed. They have word processor, spread sheet and other modes similar to Microsoft Office.
