I just came back from a tour of the Normandy Beaches. It brought tears to my eyes, looking at 9,387 headstones, at the American Cemetery. I found out why they were called: 'The Greatest Generation'. Most of them were just 18 to 22 year old kids.

Do you think that this generation of kids would have done what they did? I think not!

How about some facts. The average of the foot soldier in WWII was 27 years old. The average age of the "grunt" in Vietnam was 19 years old. As for your last statement: how wrong could you be? They do it every day. The war on terror is mean and ugly. Just because the national media will not show us the war doesn't mean that it isn't being fought by our best and bravest.

I think that many younger parents of today, have no idea how to be parents because their parents did not parent them properly. They therefore let the kindergarten and elementary schools do the parenting, while they are both busy working trying to survive in today's economy. Their peers help mold their opinions and attitudes, and so the cycle is going. I do not see it getting better any time soon, unless this countries economy starts to boom and the mom has the opportunity to be a stay at home mom and instill the values so badly needed to turn this country around.

It's sad but you are probably right!

Judging a book by a fb post which is mostly BS to begin with? Our granddaughter managed to graduate HS early despite many surgeries and health issues, now drives, owns her own vehicle, has 2 jobs, has met twice with
a local bank manager to understand and learn about different types of accounts, building credit etc., has opened account for college, has enrolled in junior college for this fall - all within a few months of receiving her diploma. This generation of kids are no different than any other generation. Life experience sometimes makes it easy to be critical of those that have not yet traveled our road. Hopefully she will not have to die in a war to be labeled "great", but I know she will do her duty if called upon whatever the challenge.
It is too easy to advertise and criticize the base behavior of the younger generation. They will never be any better or worse than any other generation. Let's give them the opportunity to measure their successes and failures when they become senior citizens. They need our support a helluva lot more than our criticism. Just my opinion.

The other day I was leaving a grocery store parking lot and when I pulled up to the exit onto a main artery, a motorcyclist was stopped in the middle of the exit driveway and playing on his cell phone. I didn't think he knew someone had pulled behind him because he did have a helmet on, and only tooted a little beep to get his attention. His reply was to turn to me and finger me and then just to make sure he put his finger under his chin and flipped me off twice more. Just what type of support should I have given him?

The real problem isn't that he blocked me. It was he was totally oblivious to his surroundings and his cell phone was so important to be on a motorcycle and using it in his hands. He eventually pulled out into the roadway like a bat out of hell. Odd thing was I caught up to him at the very next red light two lanes over from him. Guess what - I saw him again, he was back on the hand held cell phone even after the light turned green.

I couldn't find support for him but there is plenty of criticism that could be placed at his feet. Like civility, and paying attention to a situation that could cost him his life (driving irresponsibly) etc... As to his behavior I'll let karma take care of him - what goes around comes around.

There is no Education system. What we do have is a politicized cesspool of inefficiency which is rapidly turning into a for profit industry.

Sadly, much, if not of all it, is the fault of the parents; although we have to give some credit to today's education system.

She does not realize that potential employers will look at all her postings on the web. Many of them will NOT be impressed.

This is probably going to come back to bite her in her pretty little butt and she won't even know why. Sad.

Dear America,

Yesterday,

This newly graduated student made a Facebook post using this picture and stating the following...

"got suspended twice, in school suspension 5 times, always skipped classes, had a 2.4 gpa and did nothing but fuck around. you can do it, kids."

In 24hrs,

This photo has received over 70k shares and this "great" example of our next generation has received over 51k followers over night.....

Yes, followers over a post that is simply a testament to the fact that our school system and our parenting has gone out the door completely...

However,

Who is to blame for what goes viral and what spreads within our society?!

We ARE!!!

The share button does not hit itself....this type of behavior only happens because we let it happen and allow it to be so.....

America.....this is your future!!

We as parents and as a society HAVE to do better!

Food for thought👍🏻

I've read and been told that a lot of prospective employers will check Facebook sites and the Internet for crap such as this. Poetic justice?

The sad fact is, some of those well motivated kids in with average kids or in sub-par schools will not succeed, they will become followers. I taught 8th grade gang members, streets bangers, kids with mental disabilities, etc. and I had someone from each group who wanted to succeed. The issues I faced were lack of supplies (from textbooks to paper and pens) and the kids see this and feel they're not worth their school shelling out money to supply them with the basics (if there is a parent/guardian they don't care or have the money). Another issue was lack of regard for education. No one instilled in these kids why it was important to get an education. So many prior to me had just thrown these kids aside (parents, teachers, counselors, etc). I could go on and on but you all know what's going on in the world of education and it's just continuing to go down hill with the current Secretary of Education.

I'm concerned for our (yourselves and mine) futures, along with the future generations if educational issues are not dealt with quickly. I certainly would be uneasy with this young lady running the country in her current mindset, but let's see how she seems 10 years down the road. She might be an entirely different person.
Sorry for the rant, but I love teaching, kids and education.

i'll agree that more kids today bow to peer pressure, but teaching from home can counter that. as for the quality of the school or the money shelled out, that's minor. back in the late 19th and early 20th century black and poor white underfunded schools put out a good number of well educated students.

I taught college mathematics for 38 years. The disturbing thing I saw the last few years I taught was that students no longer know how to figure things out. They avoid that intellectual endeavor and just look everything up on-line. Consequently they do not developing problem solving skills (applicable to all areas of life) that they will need to compete in today's job market.

I teach part time in the school of engineering at a local university (after 35 years as an aerospace engineer and manager). One of my students wasn't performing well in my class. I was discussing this with him and the fact that a significant part of a university education is to learn how to think and solve problems. He looked at me and said something like: "I'm going to be an airline pilot; I don't need to think. I only have to do what air traffic control tells me to do." I almost fell out of my chair. If I ever see him getting into the pointy end of an airliner I'm boarding, I'm getting off. There seems to be a significant lack of inquisitiveness in many students.
