Post processing software could reduce the slight overexposure and may be able to remove some of the noise, but if these are for home use then leave them and enjoy the beautiful memories.

is lightroom 4 considered "post processing"? that's what I used

Anything you do to modify your photo is considered post processing.

I am shocked that you have this lens. It is an awsome pro lens and is worth twice the value of your camera and you a self confessed "newbie".

I like the way the white sky in pic 2 halos the balloons and then turns to blue. I would have maybe liked to see the baloons and the girl better placed adhering to the rule of thirds.

There is not much scope for cropping it that way now as there is not much to the left of the girl to clone extra trees and sky in and you would loose that white halo if you cropped some off the right. This would have needed to be done at the time of shooting. Otherwise a great image very pleasing.

I do not think your settings were all that wrong either. I also do not think your camera auto ISO would have picked ISO 1600 with all that light so can only presume you did.

I always try and shoot with my ISO as low as I can get it before causing problems to my hand holding at my shutter speed. mostly below ISO 400 and typically 100 or 200 and I never use Auto ISO.

If it was taken using the rule of thirds with less noise I can't see why a stock photo company would turn it down even.

My reply is concerning the fact that you said you were too old to go to a class. I am 67 and I just finished Digital Photography 1 at George Brown College. I am starting Photography 2 on Wednesday. We are never too old for anything... I also completed my 12th grade in Communication and Mathematic (won an award) at GBC in May of this year ! So, GO FOR IT ! it is lots of fun...

That beard makes you look slightly older. ;)
