I suggest a used or refurbished Sony NEX body and a compatible good lens.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE OLYMPUS OUTFIT Olympus Pen E-PL5 currently with Olympus' surprisingly sharp 14-42mm {28-84mm effective} 'kit' lens that I will sell inexpensively. One of the best (and again low cost) street lens options with that camera was the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens {34mm effective}. I previously had the 17mm and was highly pleased with the speed, sharpness and color rendition of that lens. PM if interested, Rab-Eye.

That's a great combination.

The only reason it buy mirrorless is to reduce the size and weight of a camera

I actually think the main benefit of mirrorless is "live view". Seeing what the sensor sees is really cool.

After getting used to mirrorless features like focus magnification and focus peaking, it would be hard for me to not use mirrorless.

There's also "zebras" but I don't find that feature is as useful, and don't use the zebra feature much.

If you shoot Nikon DX, you know the 35 mm f/1.8 is an inexpensive lenses that performs extremely well. That's what I'm looking for in a body and lens combination, just to try out mirrorless. I frankly want to spend as little as possible, but enough to get something worth shooting with. My primary interest in it is for street photography, so in terms of the lens, I would like something on the short end, about 24mm, zoom or prime. In your opinion, what is the camera and lens I am after?

Sony A6000, 19 or 30mm Sigma 2.8 ......

If you want a good photos go with a Fuji. I recommend that you look at the Xt2 with the 23mm F2.0 lens (35mm equivalent). If you want to save money look at the older XT1 and the same lens. You will get the same or better photos with the Fuji. I know because I shot Nikon FF with an assortment of lenses for many years. With the Fuji XT@ I have lost no resolution and and my color rendition is actually better.

I agree; I have that combination. Nobody makes jpegs like Fuji, although Olympus is close. If you shoot RAW with the Fuji and decide you want the image to look like Reala or Velvia, just hit the RAW conversion in the menu and convert it to a jpeg with the film simulation you want. I bought my X-T2 for $380 used. Wouldn't part with it.

I paid $380 for mine, used. A big advantage over the Pens is the EVF.

Gx-7 :-)

The LX-7 is a point and shoot...a very fine one (but now it's getting a bit long toothed).

Thank you! I meant GX-7 to be sure. Mirrorless camera, mindless memory.

It's not as though the names of these things are easy to remember.

If you just want to try, then I recommend used.

For street photography with prime lenses, I recommend Olympus for in-body stabilization. But I also recommend models that have electronic shutter (common in Panasonic but limited in Olympus). Tilt screen versus fold-out screen is also a plus.

I think that narrows the selection to either the Olympus OMD E-M10 mark II or E-M1 mark I. The E-M10.2 is definitely less expensive.

Olympus prime lenses are typically silver, and I prefer a silver/black body over an all black body with them. The E-M10.2 is commonly available in silver/black; the E-M1.1 is not. Panasonic prime lenses are typically grey/black, and will look okay on either color body.

You can get a silver E-M10.2 for $375 or less. Black for a bit less.

Olympus makes 17mm and 25mm prime lenses; the cheapest is the 17mm f/2.8 which sells used for $175 or less. The 25mm f/1.8 can be had for $275 or less, and the 17mm f/1.8 can be had for $325 or less.

Panasonic also makes prime lenses; the 14mm f/2.5 for $175 or less, and the 20mm f/1.7 for $250 or less. They also make a 15mm, but it's not cheap.

I recommend the 14, 17, or 20mm for street; my preference is the 17mm but if you want 28mm equivalent then the 14mm f/2.5 is for you. But if you want shallower DOF, then the 20mm f/1.7 is probably your best bet.

Final recommendation:

Olympus E-M10 mark II with 14mm f/2.5 or 20mm f/1.7, for less than $600.

You can shop around, and maybe shave $100 or so off. For cheaper, you can look at the Olympus Pen models, and use a zoom lens. But I don't think it will give you the best features of the system.

I have a Sony a6000 and have used it successfully for sports, primarily with a Sony 50/1.8 lens. Easier to recommend the camera than the lens for street photography. Really depends on your particular style.

Olympus OMD EM10ii is going to be smallest and you can pick up a body for under $500 right now. Fuji is going to have the best image quality and lenses/lens lineup. I'd recommend an X-t20 and one of their pancakes if you go that route. If price is no object pick up a Fuji range-finder style with a fixed lens. Awesome!

I'd get a used Sony A6000 and the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens. About $600 for image quality at least as good as your Nikon.

I totally agree with Dave, That Sony a6000 and a Sigma 30mm f/2.8 is a street shooter's dream.

I use both an old Lumix GF1 and an Olympus E-M10 with Sigma 19mm 2.8 EX DN (38mm equvilent - great for street!) and a Sigma Contemporary 30mm 1.4 (60mm equivalent) with exemplary sharp results. I also use adaptors that I use Minolta 28mm, 45mm, 58mm (F1.4) and 135mm (F2.8 )(each under $30.) lenses with those bodies. Fantastic images! Fun to use!
Secondly, I have just puchased an adapter that lets me use Nikkor F AND G mount lenses of which I have quite a few (lenses used with Nikon D90, D3100 and D7100 bodies).
Also, I use a Kiron 70-150 f4.0 lens (X2 crop factor, obviously) ($20.) with those two bodies. That lens is sharp as s**t!
In conclusion, 4/3 cameras are fantastic to use one you get used to them. People tend to not react like they do to a full sized DSLR when you are toting then around - in general they are much less nervous.
I use both an old Lumix GF1 and an Olympus E-M10 w... (show quote)

That Kiron 70-150 produces superb results.

I have recently bought a Panasonic LUMIX g85. Love it. It came with a 12-60 lens.
