OK - - I have a Canon 7D-Mk1 and an 80D.
Lenses include a Tokina 12-24 (Mk-1, I'm original owner, just refurbished by Tokina); Canon EFS 15-85; Canon EFS 18-200; Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC
Yeah - I'll probably sell the Canon 15-85 soon, provided the refurb'ed Tokina works properly, as the Tammy is far superior to the 15-85
Although the 15-85 makes a nice walk-around for my crop-sensor cameras <sigh>
-
I am planning to take the Tokina 12-24 /f4 and the Canon EFS 18-200 /f 3.5-5.6 IS
Question is:
Should I just take the 80D and change lenses as needed, OR
Should I take BOTH camera bodies with the 12-24 on one (which and why) and the 18-200 on the other ??
Is there ANY reason I should consider taking the superb Tammy 24-70 (and if so - one body and which, or both) ??
OR - - should I just buy a NEW lens - like the Tamron 16-300, and just take that and the 80D ??
I'm due for a GAS Attack !!
-
Just to complicate matters, I also have a very convenient Fuji S1 all in one Bridge 50x to 24-1200 equivalent
Should I FORGET about the Canon stuff and just take the Fuji ??
Would appreciate insights into your answers. (Mike - - are you out there ?? )

80D with the 15-85 and a 70-200 f4 L for the GAS attack - and you are done. Crop the 80D if you must or take a 1.4X - if you must.

Your question is like a Brit asking what to take to America.

Alaska stretches the same distances, and climate changes, as from Florida to Canada and all the way to California! Where in Alaska are you going??? And what will you photograph???

Can't argue with that, Floyd.

It depends on your trekking, weight etc. Also how particular you are with IQ?
Do you carry a magnifying glass? I would take the bridge camera Or the long lens and the short one. As another member has said Alaska is a huge state with a varying climate.
I would also, depending on climate take a hand warmer. Not for you but for your batteries.

In August??? Why would, and where in Alaska would, batteries benefit from a hand warmer?

I wouldn't use one. I live at the northern most point in Alaska where the average temperature is colder than anywhere else in Alaska or the USA. Just a waste of time and effort in August.

Decisions! Without getting into specifics, I would take a compact and minimal DSLR gear.

I too am going to Alaska ... to photograph bears. I am pretty sure my 18~300 will be enough but I do have a 500mm prime available. I have decided to leave the 500mm home and have just ordered the Nikon P900. I don't expect the same quality as the prime but I'm hoping it will do a decent job at 500mm and it's much easier to carry around.

I am going next week for a marathon. I will also be going on a few trips arranged by my friends in Anchorage. Right now I am planning on taking the 80D with a 10-18 (I may leave this, but it is small and light), a Sigma 18-35, a Canon 70-200 2.8 and Sigma 150-600C. I don't want to take all of that, but I am unclear on what all is planned. My wife likes surprises.

So, yeah, it does depend on what you are going to do and if you have a base of operations where you can leave a few things.

There is a lot of weather issues to consider in Alaska. I would definitely carry two bodies w/ wide angle zoom and telephoto zoom. I'm a Nikon user so which lenses are best for you I'll leave up to you. There is so much to see and photograph wherever you go that you'll be grateful you have both. Changing lenses in fog, drizzle, wind... is not something you'll want to do.

It all depends on what you enjoy. Cruise ships are nice, but not for shootong wildlife. We've driven up the Alcan twice, bears, goats, moose, sheep are within 50' of the highway and amazing landscapes. The salmon run at Katmia NP in mid July, it's about a mile walk to the stand at the falls from where the water landing, shots will be from 15 ft to 150 yards. The 1st trip I used a 28-300 Nikor, on the last trip a 150-600 Tamron and monopod. My wife always carries her trusted SX-50. Just have fun!

I just returned from an Alaskan cruise and took 3 cameras and my I Phone. I used them all. My main camera was a DSLR with a Tamron 16-300. For reach, I shot with my super zoom SX50; for candid photos, I used a compact point and shoot; for convenience and low light, I used the IPhone. If I had to do it again, I would bring the same gear.

Took everything to Alaska years ago and only used Cannon 70-200 2.8 and wide angle zoom (don't remember which one I used). If you can arrange a fly in trip to Brooks Falls if there is still a salmon run you won't regret it. I got some great Brown Bear pictures there in July!
