Nikon 16-80 vs 17-55 Lens

I used to own a 17-55. I found it to be a pretty good lens. But it is very heavy and large compared to the 16-80 that I now have and this newer lens has the advantage of VR along with slightly more reach in a much smaller and lighter package. The biggest reason I sometimes use DX gear over my full frame is because it is more convenient to carry. And, and least with my copy, it is sharper edge to edge than my 24-120. It is my favorite DX lens.

What's the f-stop range on each lens. That would be my first consideration

I resent purchased the Nikon 16-80 f2.8-4, not very happy for one reason the variable zoom, it changing f/stop & exposure when I am using flash in aperture mode. Didn't do my homework before I purchased it, really wanted a true 2.8 lens that doesn't change when zooming. Other than that it is a great lens very sharp and good contrast. My flash is a Nikon SB 800, anyone got any ideas...HELP!!!

When I was shooting DX, at one time bought the venerable 16-85, but then moved to the 17-55 because of the F/2.8 feature; I lost the extra reach, but liked the quality of the faster lens. Now shooting full frame; moved from the 24-120 to the 24-70 and am pleased. Still carry the 24-120 with me on trips but rarely use it.

I just did a sharpness comparison between my 16-80 mm and a 1980’s used $40, 50 mm series E lens. The series E was sharper! I am hoping things will improve after getting the lens and D500 camera calibrated. If that doesn’t work, I may be looking for another walk around lens, perhaps the Nikon 17-55 or 16-35.
