Before we invaded the average citizen could go to the store for a loaf of bread without getting killed.
As you know, I don't try to insult people on this forum, but I got to say that you and Welheim are grossly misinformed about what went on in Iraq before we invaded. I purposely pulled a New York Times article from the beginning of the war when we didn't yet know all the atrocities that Saddam committed.
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/26/weekinreview/the-world-how-many-people-has-hussein-killed.htmlAfter reading this, you decide whether it was safe to go out and buy a loaf of bread in Iraq, or do anything for that matter. As time went on and the U.S. Army began excavating the mass graves left by Saddam, the numbers of dead climbed to these approximately figures:
Civilian Executions - 600,000+
Deaths in the needless war with Iran - 500,000
Kurdish eradication - 100,000+
Deaths from invasion of Kuwait - 100,000
The civilian killings apart from the war deaths average between 75-125 people per day of every single day in Saddam's reign, depending on the estimates.

He was a horrible man and you didn't want to be suspected of not being loyal to him. If you were an average non-political Iraqi, your life expectancy was considerably greater before the war than after. If you are a Sunni Muslim this may still be true.
