I have a Nikon D500 and a Sigma 160-600mm Contemporary. I am considering a 1.4x teleconverter and would like any info on using a Nikon versus a Sigma TC.

I have the D500, Sigma 150-600 C, and the Sigma TC-1401. First off, I don't know if I got a good copy but the 150-600 is a very sharp lens. I tested both the C vs Sport version and went the C because I hand hold for most of my shots. I did tune it with the dock and focus align software (for the d7100)but to be honest, it came out of the box almost perfect. I have to do it again with the D500 (with and without the TC on it) which is my early summer project. I bought the lens just before the Nikon 200-500 was released otherwise I would have gone with the Nikon at the time. Yes the C version is a little soft at 600 but the Nikon lens doesn't go to that focal length so you can't compare them. At 500mm the C version is pretty sharp. I don't think you will loose to much going with the lens you already have!! Yes the sport is a better lens but it is a beast!! I have no experience with the G2 but it sounds awesome from reviews.

Now on to the TC-1401. This is the TC that is made for the Sigma lens you have so I would go with that one. It will make all your images very slightly softer (esp at 600 mm) but it is better than cropping (I have done tests on that one). Up until 500 mm, it is a very good combo and I have no problems what so ever using autofocusing in low light both with a D7100 and D500. The photos at 600 mm with the TC are soft but certainly not unacceptable.

I use the Kenko with all my Nikor lenses no problems. If you are not going to use it very often I would go with the Kenko.

I would start testing with the cheapest option ( Tamron SP or Kenko Pro) and work my way up from there if dis-satisfied .....You will need plenty of stabilization/shutter speed/ISO to get acceptable results for which-ever one you wind up with.

I am a great proponent of maximizing the IQ of your native lens and cropping and using pixel enlargement - if necessary over using any TC.

I have a Nikon D90 and a D7200. I also have a Nikon teleconverter TC201 2x. I use it with my Tamron 150-600 VC with no problems. Both cameras are crop cameras so the 2x with the 600mm so that's about 1560mm at a 1.3 crop. It fits just fine.

Some third party converters do not work well as the Sigma converter. I hope that this helps.

I have this lense with the recommended Sigma 1.4 TC. Be aware that it takes a lot of light to capture autofocus. This, I understand is due to sensor size. Same combo works great on my 750. However, this lense on the 500 with out the TC is great. In fact, I keep it on all the time. Use it for BIF and wildlife.

I must have gotten lucky with my Sigma 150-600 with the TC-1401 combo (although luck should have nothing to do with why autofocus is difficult in low light). On both my d7100 and D500, they focus fast and accurately even at dusk or dawn. I must be shooting at things with good contrast.
