My 1st try at BIF's, need a lot more practice, lol. What are the recommended settings for these type of shots. I was using a 75mm to 300mm lens at 300mm.
Im afraid that the lens is too short for the type of images you are trying to obtain. Also I believe that lens is one of the worse lens Canon has ever produced. I would try to invest in a longer lens. PP will not save the original image.

I did get a 500mm mirror lens from opteka, still learning how to use it.
The original photograph, as viewed on my monitor is under exposed and lacks detail in the bird. Your first attempt has brought more detail out in the bird and your second attempt even more detail in the bird. It has also brought a halo around the bird in both attempts. You need to concentrate your efforts of exposing correctly in camera.
You need to use exposure compensation (or manual exposure) to correct for the meter reading of the sky. Your original looks to be 2-3 stops under exposed because the meter is reading the bright sky. Try starting at -2 EV and use more if needed.
