I recently attended a wedding and was upset with the professional photographers at the wedding. During the ceremony, one of the video photographers actually stood directly behind the groom, while the bride was walking down the aisle. (I mean inches from the back of the groom's head) It was very disruptive to the ceremony. The still photographer did much better. Sure, they will have great videos of the wedding, but is it necessary to be that close, with today's equipment? I would like to hear from some professional photographers opinions. Thanks

Did the bride and groom ask the videographer to do it this way? It does seem extreme to me.

My goal at a wedding is to be unseen and unheard during the ceremony. When ask when or how I got that shoot, I know I did my job unnoticed.
Unless it was requested that way it was uncalled for. You know he was in the way of the photographer also. That is why the videographer and photographer need to work together well, and know what the other is doing. They should not be hired separately but as a team.

Norm, I couldn't agree more with you comment about being unseen. When people ask how I did that, because they didn't notice me, I know I'm doing my job. Regarding being hired as a team, I always talk with the videographer(s) about working styles so we don't fall all over each other and we're able to alert one another to events happening that are off script.

I worked a wedding for a friend and I was told that I was not to be in the video by the head brides maid. Problem three cameras were going at the same time so I stood in the same place for the entire wedding and took pictures since it was the only place I could be during the wedding when that i couldn't be seen at. The bride was upset with her pictures but her husband and the groomsman informed her of what the brides made said and that I was following the rules. The bride before the wedding, informed me that the brides maid was in charge and follow her orders. By the way, the video sucked and the editing was really terrible.

As the Wedding Photographer, I think I am the most important person apart from the Wedding Couple. Nobody tells me what to do, I dictate where who goes and how things happen! I'm being paid to record the wedding memories as best as possible and I will do just that. Including other photographers and videographers in some of the shots is something I do, because it was part of the wedding. I use two cameras, one with a telephoto lens that allows me to stand away but still get close up shots of the ring being put on, and the other with a prime lens and wide aperture that allows me to focus shots on a single person at a time!

Imagine what the still photographer had to deal with taking pictures with that damned videographer in all of his shots! Generally, the couple know that the videographer will be in that close as it is almost always covered at the rehearsal, but the videographer doesn't state how "disruptive" it could be to the guests (or still photographer)

At my son's wedding about 10+ years back, the video (& photo) production was so immense that the quests (myself especially included) felt we were just spectators at the making of a new movie. That we might have to see the wedding, bride, groom at it's premier at some local theater (or worse as an home movie at his house).
In the end it was great fun and full of memories, but WOW, what a production.
I'd bet the bar bill was way above average.

Presumably, the bride and groom and parents discuss what the photographer will do at the wedding. If they want to be surrounded by cameras during the event, that's their (bad) choice. If the photographer is just getting in the way, then someone should clue him in. Someone has to decide if this will be a wedding or a photo shoot.

We have nice wedding photos taken by friends and family. They're in an album and have been digitized, but we don't look at them every day and bring them out to show everyone who enters the house. With the divorce rate running around 50%, I think the photos often outlive the marriage.
