Exuviae, exoskeleton, left by a molting Leafhopper. About 1/4 inch long. One of my first experiments using speedlight mounted on a Stroboframe.

What diffusion are you using on speedlight head? A 6x8-inch softbox diffuser may reduce shadow, and soften specular highlights.
Interesting capture.

Using a soft-box as you suggest. The light was to the upper left of the lens. The shadow became more prominent as I was processing to bring out the structure of the subject.

But I only see one exuvium? exuvia? exuviae? An interesting word, 3 common forms, none of them singular! I guess like 'pants' -- is one leg a pant? -- there is no singular, perhaps because of all the legs???

Make sure that the internal white cloth diffuser is stretched from one side to the other, and attached via Velcro patch. Also, make sure that speedlight plastic diffuser is deployed in front of flash lens. The combo of all three will provide the most even illumination, corner to corner of your softbox face.

Nikonian72:

Thanks for the tips.

In addition I have glued popsicle sticks to the sides so it will hold its shape.
Makes it a little more awkward to transport but more consistent to aim.

Here is another possibility to keep the soft box open while shooting. Sorry about the pics. My wife just shot them for me with her phone. Anyway, I cut 3/32" fiberglass (white) and carbon fiber(black because I ran out of fiberglass) rods to length and did nothing to the soft box but slip them down through the binding. The end of it is open. I pulled them partly out so you can see how they fit into the edge binding. I can remove them and put them in the pouch the soft box came in to transport it and then fold the soft box. Just another way of doing it.

I did the same thing. Instead of carbon fiber rods, you can use bamboo cooking skewers, which are quite cheap. Mine are 6-inches long, all four ends running under the elastic band.
