I use a Samsung tablet with this device. I can read both SD card and flash drive to view stored photos. Have not tried organizing though. Purchased from Amazon. Sorry about the quality of the photo.

Hi, I'm starting to organize my photos and backing them up. So far I've transferred folders to an external HHDD, but I want to copy them to a tablet so I can take them with me and view them without a computer. At this point I'm not interested to load videos or music, and the internet speed, if any, is secondary. I don't want to expend a fortune, and I'm interested on the lower price I can get, and still have a reasonable quality.
Can anybody advice me on what would my choices be? I'll appreciate your help

I use Google photos. Once signed in from any device all your files are accessible.

The Sandisk iXpand drive has a USB at one end and a lightning connector at the other. You could store photos on that and show them on any tablet or iPad that has one of those connectors. Up to 256GB.

Or use any one of a clutch of cloud storage. ICloud, Google photos, Dropbox, etc etc.

The new iPad is a good price for a reliable bit of kit, but others are obviously available.

I use an old Amazon 7", and I can download photos or when I have WIFI use the cloud. They have a new 8" table due for release in June for $90. A short 90 day warranty is a con, but for a dollar a day one might say risk it. Unlimited storage with Prime,

WalMart sells an android "Pro 12" 12.2" tablet which has a USB port, Marshmallow 6.0 OS, 64 GB micro SD expandable to 128 GB. Pretty quick and screen (1920X1200) is plenty good enough for photos. Price has remained pretty stable at $227 USD. Company is in Canada. Tech support looks a bit sketchy. On the other hand Wally World has a good return policy.

I'm using an iPad Pro, so I have a rather large screen. I keep a set of my favorite shots on it, and my full library on the laptop and 2 x 2Tb Western Digital external drives as backup. But here's the trick:

I run a copy of my favorites through a vintage copy of LView Pro to reduce them to a manageable jpg size for the tablet or the picture frame. Figure a 20 Mb jpg off the D810 will get reduced to at most 3 Mb. For viewing and display purposes, this suits me just fine. I forget what version of LView I'm using, but it is over 20 years old and cost me $5 or so to register...and I don't like the fancier later versions.

Safest, most convenient place for your photos is in the cloud. All providers will use a RAID storage which places several copies of your data out there and provides high levels of encryption so only you know what the data is. If you delete your pictures off your storage location, you have 90 days to realize what you did and request recovery.

Now, imagine you go someplace w/o your laptop, and someone asks about a photo - you can sit down at any computer and sign-in and pull up that photo. Because I automatically store my photos to µsoft cloud, all my photos are available on my phone, and the photos I take with my phone will be waiting for men when I open my laptop.

I don't know about IPads, but Samsung and other Android tablets all let you insert microsd card with 64gb or more of space. Should be enough for several thousand jpeg images or a couple thousand RAW. Plus you can rapidly replace the card for more.

FYI: I am not aware of many tablets that will take a USB drive. Some will take an SD or micro-SD card.

Good luck.

You can get a thumb drive that has a micro USB connector on one side and a regular USB connector on the other side.
I got a 16 gb one from the Lenovo website to use on my Lenovo 10" tablet. Allows you to download things from your PC or laptop and view on your tablet.

I just came back from a month long trip to Israel and Europe. I shot over a thousand images. Every night I would pull out the SD from my nikon, insert it into a USB adapter and plug it into my 8" Samsung tablet (which cost me less than $200). I would view my images and than back them up on a thumb drive which is also plugged into the same adapter. Yes, it is arduous, but it serves me right w/o the need to schlep a notebook.

thank you again. I've been looking in Amazon and I'm more confused than ever. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of choices....
Initially I was budgeting between 100 and 200$ for a simple tablet/ Does anybody have an advice on a tablet with the characteristics stated?

I think I'm likin' this solution, Matti. I'm going to see if I can make it work for me.

iPad Air now starting at $329. Get the highest amount of memory you can afford. Google Photos works great, in the background, and is accessible from any internet-connected computer.

I recently got a Lenovo 10" tablet from wally world. Was originally $99 but I got it on sale for $79.
It has 16 gb of internal memory and has place for micro SD card. It is pretty fast, has wi-fi and bluetooth, front and rear camera, stereo speakers with built in equalizer. I have been well satisfied with this tablet, for the price it is a bargain.

Since you stated that you don't intend PP on this device, there's no need to spend a fortune on a Surface Pro or any other ultralight laptop, just stick with a tablet. If price were no object, I would have bought one of the Samsung tablets I drool over every time I go to Costco, but I'm cheap. I recently bought an Amazon Fire HD8 for $89 and am very pleased with it. I got the 32GB model and added a 128GB micro SD card for another $33. It will take up to a 200GB card, and you can use a flash drive with an OTG adapter or get one of the dual drives that has a micro-b usb tip. It's reasonably light at 12 ounces, a convenient size, and the 8" display yields vivid color and 1280 x 800 resolution. 12 hours of battery life. Although it comes set up to access only the Amazon app store, there's a simple workaround (downloading and installing half a dozen apps in a specific order) that gives you the ability to download Chrome and access the Google Playstore for your apps.
