When I use the IR remote, I'm not very far away from the camera. I'll have to make a list of what not to do when I'm out in public so I don't look like a newbie.

Take a look at this if you will be adding radio control flash. That is real handy as no linen of site is necessary, and the flash is controlled on the camera screen.
