Thank you all for the additional info; this will take me awhile to work through! And my pea brain wasn't thinking about difference between area of sharpest focus vs where camera was aiming at moment of shutter click vs where I actually set the focus point.

Lightroom and PS next year, then we're golden! (John, I've sold the Canon gear, except for sx50, and am into mirrorless now, Panasonic and Olympus )

I'm very grateful for everyone's time and suggestions.

If you use a Mac and can get a copy of the discontinued Aperture, it has the feature you are after.

Are you using Canon gear? If so, Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP4) will show you the focus points active at exposure. If not Canon, sorry, can't help.

if you have Canon, the DPP software that comes with the camera has it.

When I first purchased my 1D MIV, the software that came with it would do that. I didn't use it much. As I recall, it would also show the "blinkies" just like the back screen. But then, you don't use Canon anymore! Guess this info wasn't worth much! Sorry.

Hey Linda,

In Nikons there is a setting that shows you the focus point in live view during playback.

But I am very interested to see if there is a stand alone too.

NikonView has a setting you can turn on that will show the focus point.

A couple of times in discussion of focusing issues, I've seen an overlay posted - a green rectangle, or grouping - to show where the camera focused. Do you know what I mean? Is there a stand-alone app or software one can download?

Yes I know what you mean but, with my camera at least, it doesn't necessarily mean where it was focused, only where the focus point was when the shutter was snapped. If you pre-focused on another part of the image, then re-composed, the green point will still be in the middle (assuming the center focus point was used) because that's where it was when the shutter was pushed.

Good Morning-
I googled your query - not much out there. There is the Nikon software and there is a plug in for LR. Other than that I'm coming up pretty empty. You are shooting with Panasonic I believe. Maybe it would be helpful to go on their website/forum and ask. My Fujifilm X-T2 has a built in display to view focal points- have you tried rotating through you camera display to see if there is a screen to display those points?

Well Linda, it is rare that I give up a search, but so many dead links... I did pass on https://github.com/musselwhizzle/Focus-Points to my friend in England... Heather... she has a Pentax K-50 which is listed. My Canon SX-50 is prob OK since SX30, SX40 HS are listed. Thank you for the net adventure... but.... aaaa .... can one not see where the focus areas are by just visual inspection... any monitor over 7" in focus should be apparent.. like on my 27" or our HDTV 50"... are we using software to see what we can see by eye??? Do we really need a plug in to tell us that 2+2=4???

Also the Select>focus show areas is a good one built in.
Well Linda, it is rare that I give up a search, bu... (show quote)

The software you linked too, almost works for me but not quite.
It only shows AF confirmed points I also use manual lenses but since only centre spot is active that's not so hard.
however with AF points it brings up a copy of the photo with the focus points and active points in the top left inch.
That's not ideal however I made some loupe overlays for pentax and these do show the focus points over the correct area's of your photograph.
There are additional ones replicating the view finder and also light metering area's

I did these for the Pentax K5 and K200D but they are just overlays so you can use them with any camera. If your sensor patterns are different you can use one of my overlays as a basis for one of your own. I think the k50 has the same focus and metering points as the k5 the k3 and up i think have more...

Anyway this plugin isn't perfect but its good enough for me and if i use the overlay showing all focus points i just look at the focus point the plugin said was active. The viewfinder view is a lot of fun, if you can't remember where you were focusing this will show you alright :) Try not to get into trouble ;)

Capture One will do it so I guess it must be possible in Lightroom too.

It's not a "stand alone" but Capture One has included that feature for years.

Earlier this year, Anthony Morganti did a dozen or so videos in which he post processed images sent in by others. In several he used a Lightroom plug/in (for LR6 and CC) that showed where the cameras were focusing. Go to anthonymorganti.com or YouTube and review those videos. He tells you what it is and where to get it.

Thanks to all the additional posters; you guys are awesome! Sorry I didn't mention my gear and pp programs up front, and I also seem to have confused a couple of folks as to what my question was actually about

A couple of people have posted links that I will follow up on once I get my external HD (to move pics). I just discovered a couple of days ago I've let my laptop grow to nearly overflowing. So many ways to mess up once our brains go into "senior" mode

How do you show what is in focus or focus points using Paintshop Pro? It might be worth getting just for that feature alone . . .

Thank you all for the information! I also read an old (11 years!) short thread about Canon's software. I have never owned a Nikon, and got rid of my Canons - lol. I'll check the other suggestions.

I use PS Elements 13, but keep adding to the list of reasons to make the switch to PS and Lightroom. Much appreciated!

Found the following link.

Maybe it will help.

After reading the entire post I think this could be a big help in checking the AF function of your camera. With all my Canon bodies I can see with DPP software where the focus point was on the camera and hopefully that's the sharpest focus point. If the two don't line up you could easily see if your camera was focusing either front or back. I will have to check this out.
