New Camera . . . Seeking advise/options. . .
Sell it right away. Good down payment on that next lens. You can always buy one back; used if need be.
Good Shooting
Keep the grip if for no other reason than the , camera has a faster frame rate with it....good luck.

I can't find anything that said the grip would increase the frame rate. The D500 has 10fps rate. How fast is it with the grip?
Sell it. Give the money to your wife, it will pay off in the end.

I think you can find someone who wants the D810 but not the grip and sell it to you. Nikon is also throwing in the free grip now for the D810.
Yah ,Nikonusa had a year end sale on refurbished D810s for $1899.00 but had to pay taxes.Still a good deal , I wanted it for My landscapes it has a base ISO of 64 @ that it has 14.8 stops of dynamic range. The center weighted metering is also great , still trying to selling my D7100 to get a 18 - 35 2. Wide.

I think somebody should "get a grip."

Well, I finally got my new D500 . . . I've been saving for a while, and Nikon had a special sale that I couldn't resist . . . I whined to my wife and she gave me the $300 I was short (good wife). The camera was $1999 for body only a month ago . . . Nikon lowered it to $1799 . . . AND . . . Includes a free MB-D17 battery grip . . . WOW . . . Now my delema is this : I doubt if I'll ever use the battery grip . . . Makes camera too big, I don't shoot in studio or high volume sports, I'm pretty sure just having an extra battery along if needed will be all I ever need for the hiking and family shooting I do. It's normally priced at $329 . . . Should I keep it in case I ever change my mind (I doubt it) ? Or should I try to sell it for $250 or so ? It's NIB . . . Opinions ?

It's entirely up to you. Some folks like battery grips, others don't.
Personally I've used grips (or similar motor drives or winders) on all my DSLR and SLR cameras for several decades.
But my main reasons for using them are not what you mention. Mostly I want grips on my cameras for the secondary controls, which make vertical/portrait orientation shooting much nicer.
Sure, I like having another battery to be able to shoot longer between battery changes. Also, some of my film cameras the grip made faster frame rates possible (not sure about the D500, but I think some Nikon do this, too, even with their modern DSLRs).
I also use a number of relatively large lenses... and the added mass with the grip and add'l battery actually helps with the balance of camera and lens. In turn, I think that makes for steadier handheld shots.
Stay AK Gpa - I have a D5 and other NIKON camera's without battery grips. once you get use to going vertical with a grip, you'll wonder why you didn't want it. No more twisting your hands into weird positions. To me it would be worth a little extra weight. BTW I'm 70 plus and will soon purchase battery grips for my 810 & 7100. Love the way the positioning of the major controls are naturally placed for vertical shooting
Well . . . It seems like the consensus is to keep it and give it a try, so I guess that's what I'll do . . . If I find that I never use it or don't like it . . . I can probably sell or trade it later . . . 😊
