Good grief, I must pre-date most everyone on this thread. My memories are of an Argus C-3 and later a Voightlander Vitesa(sp?) with Kodachrome ASA 12!! I was a lowly seaman making $67 a month on a Destroyer DD-677 McDermut out of San Diego from 1952 through 1955. We spent six or eight months each year in the far east and the rest of the time either in transit or up and down the west coast. Had tons of photo opportunities. I have shoe boxes and carousels full of those slides. A friend recently gave me a VuPoint scanner and I've tried scanning a few slides, but the quality of the digital images were so poor I quit. Don't know if the problem is that I don't know what I'm doing (I really don't) or if the scanner just isn't capable of producing a good image. It's rated at 5 mega pixels. Has anyone had any experience with this scanner? I really would like to digitize all of them. There's a lot of memories there and those shoe boxes contain some of the best photos I've ever taken. There are also a lot of good photos that could profit from some skilled editing and become much better. ......... Coot

Hay I got you beat. Im 82 and also had a C3. That so called brick took great photos. Most all slides. I also was on a tin can the uss O'Hare DD 889. around 52 53. She was brought out of mothballs and recommission as a radar picket ship.Allways used Kodak. Never let me down.

Hal, That square box had a very real advantage for some one on a tin can. Locker space was really limited. There was no room for a decent tripod. Of course I couldn't afford one even if I had the storage space. With a f:3.5 lens and ASA 12 film, slow shutter speeds were frequently the only way you could get your shot. With the C-3 if you could find a flat surface (wall, floor or table top or whatever as long as it was flat) that would allow you to properly frame your shot, you could just brace one of the flat sides or bottom of the camera firmly against the surface and if you were careful you could successfully take a time exposure that was several seconds long. .... I never could zen with a quad just dual line and fighter kites. Most of my post Prism kites are custom made, mostly Paul Shirey Aerostars and a cherished Peter Bentancourt final prototype "Savage"

scroll down to Savage, that lavender white and teal one was the first one made and it's all mine!

True blacks always had a blueish tint wheras Kodachrome had a true black. The primary colors on Kodachrome were on seperate layers and when viewed aways had a 3D effect.

I'll probably start a battle now.....LOL..... I did try Ektachrome a few times now and then and always felt the slides were a bit too blueish for my taste.

Sam's club will do the conversion. Their price is about 18.00 for the first 50 slides, and .34 for each one after that.

Walmart is more - over 19 dollars for the first 40 and .46 for each additional.

Unless you can beat 70 years interest in photography you don't predate everyone! As to the scanner, I don't know your make.
I use an Epson Perfection 1650 and it works fine although they probably make a better one now.

I'm in that same boat. This forum has some valuable first hand recommendations in it's archives, I believe.

Bill, I can't beat that. I first started in 1949 or 1950. We're both old Coots, but I bet I'm far more lazy than you are. If you don't believe me, just ask my wife! ..... Coot

Are you trying to get the slides into digital format? One of the easiest ways is make a setup so the slides are illuminated from behind then shoot with a macro lens. Once the setup is created it goes rapidly.

Bill, That's an interesting coincidence. Just thirty minutes ago I was telling my wife how frustrated I was with the poor results I was getting from what is apparently a cheap scanner when it dawned on me that it was just taking a 5 mp picture of the illuminated slide and I might be able to get better results with my 12mp camera. Thanks.

I've never used them for slides to digital, but I use them often for routine prints from digital. I think they'll do a decent job.
