Read your manual. You probably have some setting in you camera not set properly.

Try focusing on an "easy" subject, something with contrast and sharp lines. For under $15, this eBook is a bargain.

The majority of AF errors are operator's error. "Hunting" is common when the AF system does not have a target with enough contrast but that is not the only reason for hunting.
Understand what your AF can do and learn how to use it. I bet you have set an erroneous AF setting in camera.

In most cases it's because you are trying to focus on a part of the photo that has no contrast. For auto focus to work it has to have contrasting images so it can find the focal point. Also, if the light is too low, the camera can do a lot of searching and if you try to focus on an object too close to the lens.

Another possibility could be there is not enough contrast between the subject and the background. Single point focus will help with this.

If the problem is not enough light you can shine a flashlight on the subject so the lens can lock on the focus then turn off the flashlight and take the shot. I carry a small LED flashlight in my camera bag just in case I need it for situations where i need the extra light.

The D7100 has 51 focus points...15 of which are cross type. That means that 15 points are measuring contrast both horizontally and vertically. So unless you are shooting at a white wall or pure blue sky it should focus.

I shot shelter dogs today with my D7100 ...the dogs are running around a 30x40 ft pen at Mach 1. Did the camera have to hunt for focus? Oh, yeah. But it recovers very quickly even under those circumstances, enough to get at minimum a 3 shot burst.

I would suggest, as has been mentioned many times that you test shoot something with high contrast and see if it still hunts continuously. If it does maybe the lens or camera needs to be looked at.

Wesso JPEG has a point but most likely it is not enough light for auto focus. Subject distance could be it as well.
