Vicki and others do a better job of photographing these pretty little birds, but I though I would
give it a try. Still need more practice. This was a dark and cloudy day.

Hand held @ 800mm. Distance was about 25-35 feet.

Photo #1: Canon 5Dsr - Canon 400 II DO f4 - Canon 2.0x III - 1/80 - f/8 - ISO @ 400.
Photo #2: Canon 5Dsr - Canon 400 II DO f4 - Canon 2.0x III - 1/50 - f/8 - ISO @ 400.

Great shots, Regis.

Just what are your arms made of that you can handhold an 800mm lens and take such crisp shots at only 1/50th of a second? I can't get shots that sharp at 1/800th handheld.

Your first attempt at shooting the hummers is just another example of your skill. Their feathers have a sheen which is lacking in many other birds. Thanks for sharing your
beautiful work, Regis.

Luck. I should have increased my shutter speed.

Thank you very much, Keldon, for your good comment.

Regis, these are superb image captures. Hummers are amazing subjects, their features are very difficult to define. Some people use flash to accomplish what you show in both shots. Dark and cloudy tends to mute the colors of the necks but some conditions are tough environments in which to work. "More practice?" Try freezing the wings while in motion. The true beauty of the wing is the bird's ability to reverse it while in flight. Makes for a stunning photograph whether or not flash is used. Hummingbirds make me want to master video, slo-motion really sets off the birds use of it's abilities to use the wing as no other bird does. Thanx for posting, you set the standard.
