These have worked numerous times for me. They grip evenly and I keep one in my vest and one in my equipment backpack... thus, covering all situations.

Interesting idea that makes sense that it should work

I highly recommend rubberized metal filter wrenches. The plastic ones are cheaper, but if you have a filter really stuck, plastic ones tend to slip. You can mitigate this by applying a rubber band to the filter under the wrench, but when you squeeze the wrench tightly it tends to twist sideways. This is even worse if you are trying to separate two filters or a filter from a step-up ring, which was what I needed a good wrench to do -- and my plastic wrenches couldn't handle it. I purchased a rubber-coated metal set and got them separated lickity-split with almost no effort. I believe I picked up my wrench sets from an eBay seller, but here's a link to a Neewer set on Amazon that should do the job:

When nothing else works, Strap Wrench, search for a local hardware store for small. Sears sell a set 1/2" x 4 or 6 inch diameter for <$10

Go to a local camera store, if not there, go to EBay.

The sole of my shoe works very well for me, i.e., press lens tightly against sole or heel of shoe, twist anti-clockwise, hey presto, filter loosens. Obviously this works best with smooth(ish) soles.

I have the filter tools linked earlier and they work great. But I found the even better solution is to stop using filters like that. I finally switched to Lee filter system and it's so easy to turn the ring on and off the lens when you need it. I can't even imagine going back to the round filters.

Sometimes a screw in lens hood screw into filter tighten the locking ring unscrew the filter holding the hood. The oods pretty much gripping the filter ring evenly which is usually the problem uneven pressure on the ring.

The correct length of electricians cable tie is also an uber-cheap and safe alternative to buying a wrench set.
