I wouldn't waste my money on an expensive case. I just pack it very well in my suitcase in a good camera bag. Have a good insurance policy! I've never had a problem and I travel to Europe several times a year.

He should have also recommended attaching very bright and distinctive luggage tags or ribbons to your bag so that would catch someone's attention. I do agree that many of the black softside carry on bags do look alike which is why you should try and break that paradigm with something unique and this same practice should be followed for checked luggage as well. I also doubt that thieves are are jetting all over the world to steal people's carry on. I have a Think Tank bag like the one shown and it should have been locked and clearly tagged with something very visible. There is even a metal tag riveted on the bag with a serial number and telephone number that you can call if someone is honest enough to want to return it to you. Unfortunately, the tag has the word photo all over it so it's not too stealthy.

I've used a Pelican hard case for several years on whitewater river trips, from the Yampa/Green to the Grand Canyon and it has performed flawlessly. I recently had to replace the foam inserts, but thats normal after years of pulling cameras and lenses out, pushing them back in and re arranging the places for new gear. My wife and I are going to Europe later this summer and if this ban spreads to all airlines I'll likely pack all my gear into the Pelican box as I know it will hold up.

Quite annoying really. The pelican case can survive virtually anything and so will the equipment inside, provided it is well protected with foam, etc. My suggestion is NOT to put your memory cards in with the camera gear, keep them with you in the cabin. Now whether the pelican case will actually arrive at your destination is another issue. Insure your gear.

I'm going to Chile on a photo shoot in a couple of weeks. Which Pelican case do you recommend for 2 Nikon camera bodies, 610 and 750 and 3 medium size lenses plus misc. stuff.

When I've travelled and didn't want to take everything with me I have carefully packed a camera and lens inside my luggage, making sure it's adequately cushioned on all sides by soft clothing. I haven't had a problem yet. It does limit your choices, for sure. You can't take along all the gear you would normally take in your camera bag.

I would NEVER trust having my camera gear in the luggage compartment. There is far too much abuse and theft by baggage handlers. That is one primary reason, I never fly anymore, unless traveling abroad. In that case, I would rent whatever ever gear I might need.

In September 2007 I flew to Seattle, WA, with my Leica Digilux2 in a large soft suitcase in checked baggage. It arrived with no physical damage, but all photos taken after arrival had sick colors. I assume that the damage was caused by X-raying the baggage. I sent the camera to Leica for service, and they replaced the sensor and gave me a new battery at no charge. The camera still works like new. I have not put cameras in checked baggage since then.

Yup I used to work at airport baggage. Two things employees were looking for was the fragile sign on the luggage they would stomp on it bang it on the floor and so on. Second was locks they did not have to lose time guessing.

One other strategy I use when being forced to check expensive things in my luggage is to divided up the parts as best I can, e.g., lens in one bag, body with cap in another, straps etc. in a third. Might confuse the crooks a little. Also you could consider packing a decoy like a garage sale, totally useless camera that is easier to spot and get to.

I have seen too many posts on UHH about photo gear missing from checked luggage that I would only take a camera I could secret on my body. But, the question arises: When you go thru the body check before boarding if the x-ray sees a camera (even small) will they make you check it? Remove the memory chip and write off the camera is probably the bottom line on this.

It is not true you can bring your camera gear on the plane as long as it fits in the luggage rack I don't know where he herd this from.
