Congrats!
Time to update your signature line!
I have two of these in my office now for evaluation.
Really nice build!
Realized yesterday I need to update ACR to use them.

I started with the D3100 and a Nikon 1 J1 with an FT-1 autofocus adapter to use my Nikkor lenses, and a few years ago bought a used D7000 to up my game. I can honestly say having the better camera did not improve my photos. The upgrade was a waste of money for me.

Since your major question is about the 16-80, I would say forget the 16-80 and pick up the full frame 24-70mm f2.8. You will find that for those times that you are NOT shooting wildlife or sports, this lens will stay on your D500 most of the time. On a trip to Santa Fe and Taos it stayed on my D800 the whole trip. Don't buy the new version with VR. You don't need VR on a short lens. Find the old version and save some money. It's one of Nikon's top lenses. You wont be dissatisfied. If you're going to spend 2K on a camera, don't hesitate to spend close to that much on lenses.

BTW....The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on a D500 is that I'm waiting to see what Nikon comes out with in the D8XX series.

The Tokina 24-70 is practically as good as the Nikon at a fraction of its price.

I have a D7100 and I have been contemplating getting the D500 since it came out. With the current deal, I have been hovering over the "add to cart" button on B&H for 2 days now.

My current walk around lens is a Nikon 18-200 vrii. My decision to pull the trigger or not is based on whether I should get the 16-80 mm lens with it. Any opinions from the knowledgeable UHH crowd that have used both lenses?? I have read all the reviews many times but would like some input from here. Getting it with the body knocks about $400 dollars off the price.

What do you think this the new lens will provide that you don't already have. Skip it all together.

The D500 is much better than the D7100 if 10fps, focus speed & accuracy, pixel count, tilt screen, etc. are important to you. In my opinion it does not live up to the low noise claims, but it cleans up well in PP.

I wouldn't trade mine for any available Nikon camera at this time...maybe I would.

So Steve, If I follow your logic, I should not have spent 8k on my 400/2.8 when I owned my $ 2800 F5? As for the D500, the D810 and D8xx are, and will likely be, totally different bodies meant for different purposes. I have both, and love both, but I wouldn't want to use a D810 for sports action. Like you, I am waiting to see what the new body will do for me that I just can't do without! Best of luck.

I don't do practically, as, in the case of the mentioned lenses, the Tokina isn't even close IMHO!

Well you would be in the minority in that opinion buddy. Most knowledgeable reviewers disagree. Spend your money on your delusion. It's fine by me.

Steve has no logic, just senseless opinions.

I find it curious that adults come to UHH to ask people they don't know for permission to buy stuff....
