This is my first attempt at the Milky Way - I was quite pleased with the results! The key is to focus during daylight hours and lock your focusing ring on infinity!

Are you focusing on infinity or are you setting your lens at the infinity mark? Otherwise, why can you not set at infinity during the day? Great capture, by the way!!!

Picketpost Mountain is located just outside of Superior, AZ (about 50 miles East of Phoenix) and is a favorite hiking destination for those who also like a moderate climb. The mountain has an elevation gain of about 1925 feet from trailhead to summit and is capped off by a mailbox to log your ascent and a park bench to rest your butt as you take in the 360 degree views.

Infinity is not necessarily at the infinity mark. Temperature expands and contracts the glass and lens barrow. Polymer is less affected by temperature than metal. Mirror lenses are the most affected. If you have ever looked through a telescope, you discovered that infinity focus is very critical and changeable. Night shots are almost always shot wide open when there is the least DOF. You may wish to use masking tape to hold the focus in place because "shit happends".
Happy shooting

Absolutely Beautiful...there's gotta be life out there somewhere amongst all those stars.

There definitely is. Here we are right among the stars as well.

Any chance you might "store original" ??
I think I saw a UFO between 2 of the points of light, and would like to zoom in.

Locking the focusing ring during the day hours does not negate the effects of temperature and humidity (expansion and contraction of the barrel) as the night falls, which is when carry out the capture. I does not make sense. Oh, well...

Fantastic result. Good advice. It is always hard to know when the focus is perfect in the dark. Love this photo. Thanks for allowing me to see it.
