I have owned the d500 since Christmas 2016 Nikon had it for $200 off. It is a great camera. I like that I can shoot at 10,000 iso with little noise. I have cranked it up to over 20,000 when shooting in Roman museum in Lyon. The tilt out screen is handy. I like the button placement and the predefined settings. It is heavier than the d5000 that I had before. Along with the 18 to 300 Nikon ED it can take very sharp images. Most time it focus fast. Downside is that it has a huge menu of choices. Today I wanted to change the active d-lighting setting and it took awhile to find the menu. The manual is almost an inch thick. I shoot raw and jpeg fine at the same time. I shoot manual most of the time. But today while walking though Annecy France I switched to aperture priority since I was walking in and out shade. If I place the sb800 on it the camera will lower the shutter speed to 1/250 automatically. It does not have a built in flash. Sometimes it has issues with focusing during live view; but that might be how I have the camera setup. I find that I change the metering and the focus method often depending on lighting and subject.

If you buy it I suggest that you practice for a long time changing the focus method and the metering methods. If you don't like photo change the setting. The metering will make or break a shot.

May I ask what you are doing to have the buffer size issues referenced? Is this a frequent occurrence?

I photograph a lot of birds. So continuous shooting is essential (they don't often cooperate by posing and standing still). A fast SD card helps a lot, but a larger buffer has always been desirable. More pictures per second is a great advantage, too.

I'd venture a guess at spray and pray.

LOL! I'd guess spray until the buffer fills. Fun to follow a thread...

At some point, I can't resist the urge to interject a bit of humor.

Yeah,Bob, I never do that! Well, sometimes if there are a lot of replies where it is quite apparent that most of the previous replies hadn't been read, I get a little silly.

I read through threads. If something I was going to say was already covered, I just mark it as follow this thread and move on. That is if I'm interested in the topic.

Yes,sometimes I want to immediately answer, but then find out that there were other considerations that would make my reply redundant or just plain out of step. Hey,we try!

Without redundancy where would we be?

Since you have a lot of time on your hands, as long as you don't bring home a D500, I have a challenge for you. Find a thread in this forum that is five pages or more with no redundant replies.

Haha, you're a hot ticket! I was on B&H's first shipment day when the D500 was released. Don't make me say it again!

There's good old fashion redundancy and then there's the statements obviously made by someone who has not followed the previous replies.

Don't ask if you NEED it. Ask if you want it and can responsibly afford it. Then, buy it and enjoy it. Life is short.

I like your thinking
There seems to be a lot of "settlers" for older stuff out there
I don't know why others want to save you from spending, maybe they secretly want the newest but are not fortunate enough to be able to sense ablyable able to afford nice new cameras and lens, and than others say spend-spend
You don't need saving from the equipment gathering mode
If you can justify the purchase than get what you want
It's a shame that postings don't just tell why they like or dislike a particular camera
Never let others talk you into or out of something

IMHO I'd jump on this deal - I did in November and am very happy. The D500 is the little brother to the D5 and inherits some of its most important advances such as the new auto focus system with the dedicated processor. Best of luck.
