Nikon's 'One Inch' sensor is much larger than the sensors in cell phones (which produce images many people love), but slightly smaller than the 'Micro Four Thirds' sensor which so many 'Photo Enthusiasts' love. It has it's place in the photo community....as a great Travel Camera tool, and as a Landscape Imaging tool. Some folks will love it, and others won't. How well it suits you depends upon what sort of photos you shoot, and how large you like to print them. If you want something larger, you can always go back to a Medium Format film system, like my Mamiya RB67. Dissing the One Inch sensor, while praising the M4/3, sensor, is kind of silly.

Yes it is silly and that is exactly what happened review after review when the V1 was first released.

Thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about the Nikon 1V2 mirrorless camera. Although the electronic view finder does not work, I continue to use this camera because it is so flexible and can accommodate high quality video and still photography which I require for event recoding. For those who say don't waste money on attempting to repair the 1V2, I can only believe I either spend those dollars and hope for a good repair or just continue to use it was is because I see now resale value in a camera that doesn't have all features working. I can't justify discarding the 1V2 and two lens without some return.

Just use it in live view mode. I have the Nikon1 J1 which has no viewfinder, I never missed the viewfinder. I hold the camera about a foot away, compose and shoot.

Thanks for all the input and advice. I did speak with Tec Support at Nikon and went thru all the diagnostics to try to correct the problem. I can see the image on the LCD but not thru the electronic viewfinder. Nikon's final conclusion was that I had to send the camera in for repair. I have only the 10-30 and the 30-110 lens for the 1V2. Im not planning to add lenses. The size and weight make a significant difference for the the of shooting that I do. I will seriously consider the Panasonic or Sony but don't know how to salvage my investment in the 1V2.

My entire family are Nikon 1 users. My Son has an S1 and loves it. I shoot with the V1 and if my viewfinder broke I would continue to use it from the review screen.

I have no interest in the system, but it is interesting that these same People praise the Sony rx100 series cameras with the same size sensor.

Your point being, I own Nikon 1 V2 and V3 and the Sony RX100, the only downside to the RX100 is it does not have interchangeable lenses.

My second camera is a Pentax Q-7, which came with the same kind of non-viewfinder. I hated that feature as much as I expected to, so I purchased a Hoodman.

My point is that these guys who dismiss the v1 turn around and praise the Sony 1" RX100 cameras.

I agree tdekany. The one inch sensor is anathema with the Nikon 1 systems and perfectly alright with other manufactures, even praiseworthy. I have no problem with that. It just makes assembling a kit for a friend and relative that much easier and cheaper. If you want to get into "Mirrorless" for little money Nikon 1 is the way to do it. (Used).

I own (as stated) the Nikon 1 V2 and V3 plus all the lenses made for that system as well as accessories, my one concern is that Nikon may drop the Nikon 1 V series and the V3 will be the last.

I bought my Nikon1 J1 on ebay over a year ago for $80. With the FT-1 adapter and a 55-300 Nikkor AFS VR lens I've gotten my best bird pics, better than with my D7000.

Does the adapter provide AF?

My birding kit is a Pentax version of what you are doing, but the biggest drawback is that I have to manually focus.

Yes the Nikon one does. There are some cheap ones on the market that just allow you to mate Nikon DSLR lenses to a Nikon 1 camera but they only work in Manual Focus. The Nikon offering will fully operate using Auto Focus. However I think it's around $250-$300 bucks. A bit spendy. That is why I have not bought one yet.

Yes, the Nikon FT-1 adapter gives single point autofocus with AF-S lenses. It is fast and accurate. And the 2.7 crop factor puts a larger target on the lcd screen.

It's on Amazon for $237 with free shipping. I paid $225 with shipping for mine almost 3 years ago.
